How can I use WebGL (Google Chrome 9) for rendering Google Maps API
v3 ? Or how soon will be supports a WebGL for google maps api for 2D
and 3D ?

The lack of a response tends to mean noone that read the post knows
the answer.
The question itself doesn't make sense to me.

Why? For example. hardware acceleration via WebGL can up performance
for rendering thousands markers and become a better method than Fusion
Tables and privide 3D mode with greater performance. In addition, all
this will work on mobile devices, iphone and ipad. So it very
important question!

WebGL is not yet widely supported. Once it is, there is certainly a possibility that the Maps API will use it for rendering. As you note, this would open up many possibilities for the API.

Also, WebGL is used in Street view if you are using a browser that supports it.

WebGL is really impressive technology for online mapping applications.

We were playing with WebGL as part of our R&D activities and the result is now released as an open-source project:

WebGL Earth: Free and open-source 3D virtual globe for web and mobile devices

It is an exciting project from technical point of view, also because we are using the Closure Compiler from Google, which is behind Google Maps and Google Maps API too.

I would love to use Google Maps data with this project, but because there is no direct access to tiles (http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=1396) it seems it is not possible at the moment as it would be against the TOS. Is there any way how to use Google Maps API with this kind of project?

Any feedback is welcome.

Kind regards,

Petr Pridal

Hi Radiante,

WebGL would indeed allow an easy and fast implementation of "Google
Earth" in your webbrowser. Together with Websockets (a new standard
for a persistent connection between client & server) it is possible
right now to develop a real good 3D solution of gmaps/earth. And I'm
pretty sure, that some Google guys already working on that ;)
Both techniques are still not usable in a production environment, but
it's just a matter of time and hopefully Microsoft doesn't wait again
to long to support these stuff.

Right now, You can build your own 3D map web application from scratch
(with an WebGL framework, a geo library and a tileserver). As
tileserver You should use OSM, because (as far as I know) Google
doesn't allow to use their maptiles outside of their apps.

Hi Radiante
I have no info about Chrome, but you should try out firefox v4.0
(beta)
It uses GPU hardware acceleration for graphics rendering, I found a
huge performance increase from IE7 when rendering large groups of
markers.

Hi Petr,

just noticed your post. Congratulation, very nice showcase for WebGL
with mapping applications!
