Can someone clarify whether the requirement that KML files be stored
at publicly accessible URLs means no https? https isn't really public
since it requires authentication, although maybe you could use URLs of
the form https://uid:pwd@server/etc: would they work?

Thanks

https doesn't require authentication - it just secures the session.

Yes, poor wording on my part; it's just that if you are going to
authenticate you'll probably want to do it over https. Either way
the question still stands: does Google Maps support retrieving KML
files over https and/or with authentication?

Did you see this?

I wouldn't expect authentication to work. In general, google maps API
implementations have to be generally accessible to qualify for the
free API, if you buy a Premier License, you have more options (and you
get support from Google).

Yes but that does not seem relevant. My question is not about you can
call Google
over https but whether Google can call you back (to fetch the KML
file) over https.

The problem is that "generally accessible" should be precisely
defined.

Can anyone access it from the public internet? Seem pretty clear to
me.
