Read the terms of use.

http://code.google.com/apis/maps/terms.html

You can't remove it or modify it in any way and use the map legally.

(you could check if a premier license allows that, but I wouldn't
think so)

There are a number of methods that would work.  And all of them would get your ap disabled by google, or worse, for violating the terms of service.  Note that it isn't even just google that you'd be messing with: they pay to license a lot of their map data from other sources (hence the changing copyrights in various places) and so they too are contracted to display those copyrights, and crack down on people who seek to obscure them.

If you want to use free stuff, you've got to accept the terms of service that come with it. It will be unfortunate if Google ever starts serving annoying ads along with the map data (as they did briefly for android maps), but them's the breaks.  It's their service, which they paid to develop and pay the ongoing bandwidth for serving up.
