Getting DOM nodes from a custom mapType

I'm trying to change the tile URL's of a custom mapType and need to know how to get to the DOM for those objects.

Does anyone know the secret?

This is definitely not supported by the API. Could you switch between two different (buffered) map types?

Can't you keep a reference to the node when your getTile() method
creates it?

Or am i missing something..?
