Pan Event Listener?

Whenever the center of the map changes, I'd like to take note of the
new center lat/lng. I added a listener to the "dragend" event which
works well. However, it doesn't catch when someone uses the pan
navigation control. The reference doesn't show panning to be an event
and the "bounds_changed" and the "center_changed" events fire
continuously. This present an efficiency issue as the listener makes a
call to the server.

Has anybody come up with a work around (besides disabling the pan
control)?
