Terrain Type

I would like to know if there is a way to find out what terrain type is on specified location. I want to determine types like City, Meadow, Field, Forest, Lakes, etc.

There is no API for this for sort of thing.

Might be able to get something via looking at the colour of pixels the
maps and/or satalite imagry. But dont think you can use Google's tiles
for this - as would be against the terms of use.

Perhaps openstreetmap have something.
