Searching along a route

[fsa3]

I was wondering if anyone had experience building queries that search
along a route. Basically I start with 2 addresses, I use the api to
get the legs of a trip and I want to search my db for locations X
miles away from the route. I'm wondering what the best way to
approach this is.

Multiple small area searches? A single big search and then filter by
the distance away the polyline, etc?

Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated.
