Hello all,

I'm wondering the exact implications of the following excerpt from the "Usage limits" of Places API:

--8<--
Note:
the Places API may only be used in conjunction with displaying results on a Google map; using Place data without displaying a map for which Place data was requested is prohibited. Additionally, calculation of Place information may generate copyrights, warnings and/or advertising which must be displayed to the user in some fashion.

--8<--

We developed an open source Augmented Reality application for android: mixare Augmented Reality Engine (more info under: http://www.mixare.org
The application is in the android market since march 2010 and we are using the geonames WS to get content  all around the world, in the last weeks Geonames has become a bit unreliable and in order to deliver a better user experience we are thinking of adding google places.

Our application does have a map-view (that is using Google maps), but the default view is the augmented reality one, where no map is displayed. Do you think our use case would be acceptable under the Places API Terms?

beware that if looking for this as a short term fix the Places API
hasn't been released, and Google arent generally handing out access
keys yet.

My opinion is you would be ok "Terms wise" as you say you are using a
map, just that in the augmented reality view this applies: "If screen
size constraints prevent a map being shown with search or details
results the Powered by Google logo must be shown."

But its of course only my opinion.

Hi Maxare,

It is not necessary for the map to always be visible on the screen when the Places results are shown, however if a map is not on the same screen as the results then you must display the "Powered by Google Logo" above the results.

Hi Luke,

thanks for your answer. But speaking of an augmented reality app where the results are scattered all around the user, does this mean we have to superimpress the logo on the camera view and keep it visible all the time?

Daniele

I see, Barry, thanks a lot for your answer.

It's pretty bad though that "local search" is deprecated and "places" keys are not easy to get...
