Hi mappers,

I just realized that we've been interacting for quite some time now, but most of us haven't had the pleasure of meeting each other in person... so I figured the least we could do is introduce ourselves! :)  Feel free to share as much or little as you'd like... about what you do for fun and for work, what you enjoy mapping, where you live, if you blog about geo-stuff or anything else, and so on.

I'm Adam, an American guy living in California in the city of Mountain View, which is near San Francisco and also is the home of Google headquarters (where I work).  I'm a Program Manager for Map Maker and part of the Community team.  And though I love maps and traveling around the world, I'm relatively new to the mapping arena, having previously focused on Search at Google.

I enjoy swing dancing, playing piano, working out, and doing geeky things (like posting on my blog, twitter, etc.).

But enough about me!  How about you?

I love to travel a lot, and I love maps, I also like Google to the extent not described, and always talking with my friends that Google will dominate the world at the end of 2012 and will then age 14 years Google.

You might be surprised that someone from Google Search is now active in MapMaker, but there is a good reason for it. Google's secret search algorithm is based on PigeonRank, a patented technology setup where trained pigeons are used to select the most relevant web pages for search queries. Google discovered--probably by searching with their own search engine--that pigeons have built-in navigation systems, and that they would be the ideal animals to help making maps in countries where there are no maps available yet. Adam doesn't like to talk about it in public, but in fact he took some of the technology of the Search department and is now managing a large flock of pigeons in the basement of the Google Geo office.

That was not how I came involved in MapMaker however :) As a Dutch computer programmer/website builder I was looking for options to promote our guesthouse after I moved to Kazakhstan. Unfortunately I didn't find any useful maps of the area to direct potential guests to and decided to join MapMaker to draw those maps myself. I am now doing the guesthouse thingy in summer time, while programming and mapping in the winter.

Main hobby is traveling, especially to locations only few people have been before. Collecting maps has always been part of that hobby and I collected my first topographic maps more than 30 years ago.

I am a Dutchman living in Germany and married with the most lovely woman from Brazil. This year we want to settle in Brazil. Because of the many visits we made to Brazil we know that the available navigation systems all lacks good map data, especially for the rural area's. The area I map Maranhão and particularly the area around Humberto de Campos and Barreirinhas are not to be found on maps. Also the perfect new asphalt highways are not on the maps with the result that the navigation system sent you over dirt roads. Then I found GMM Thanks Google.

Hi,  I live in Berkeley (near San Francisco), but somehow work in Los Angeles, >300 miles distant, doing IT for CENIC.  CENIC does big, fast networking for Research and Education institutions, mostly for California, but we have a North American networking footprint.  Our customers/associates include University of California (all campuses), USC, CalTech, CSU, and, generally, anyone who has Internet access if they're a K-16 school/institution.  Last time I looked we had lots of high speed peering with the usual suspects like G**gle and others.  Which costs a lot.  Please send us money.

I've had a background task at work of bringing fiber optic networks to the masses, mostly wide area, but lately metro.  Foreground task is data center infrastructure design, including cloud.  (Yes, I know, *yawn*...)

I like to travel in rural areas, mostly in SE Asia, where the maps are generally terrible or a strip map you get from the guesthouse on "how to get to Temple X."  I've had an interest in the classic Ho Chi Minh trail, in eastern Lao and Cambodia, but generally the maps are lo-res.  Hardly anything outside the main cities is mapped, so I just map away and don't care too much about pending moderations.  I just move on to some other area.  Once in a while I come across a local mapper and try to get them enlisted in The Cause.  Except for Phnom Penh I haven't had much luck.  Vietnam, of course, is well represented with mappers, so I don't do much there except add some historic sites.

For a while I've been trying to map major global historic sites and sites in the news, such as border temples from the Angkor era in Lao and Cambodia as well as Afghanistan hotspots like the Pech River Valley.  I starting, when possible, to post geo-located photos of significant waypoints to Panoramio and tracks to Wikiloc.  Content from both of these shows up on Google Earth layers, but the geo-locations are often very inaccurate.

I've been doing some mapping in Umbraro's general region, planning for a trip generally from the UK to Sri Lanka, planning a mostly northerly route.  Morteza says he can get me an Iranian visa, though, so I may look at a more southern route instead. ;)

Hi everyone,

I'm Andrés. I was born in Colombia but have lived in the US for the past 15 years. I studied Computer Science and Business Administration and am currently looking to relocate from the South Florida area where I currently live to complete my master's in Software Engineering. I mostly do freelance work developing internet applications for local companies, and used to do IT/network/db administration before that. I've also recently joined a startup to develop an identity management application, which I'm excited about.

I like backpacking/hiking, camping, cycling, kayaking, and most things outdoorsy. I really enjoy traveling, especially to places of great natural beauty. I try to squeeze in at least one trip per year to a national park. I'm hoping to make it out to Glacier and Banff NPs this year, following trips to Yellowstone/Great Tetons, the California Redwood forest and Alaska in past years. I hope I get the opportunity to travel in my own country someday, which has amazing natural beauty, but the violence when was growing up prevented many people from traveling to remote rural areas. I'm also into nature photography (just an amateur), yoga and geeky computer stuff.

I'm not sure how I ended up in Map Maker, but I've been hooked since, (bragging aside) racking almost 15,000 edits and 1,600 km of roads in the ~180 days that I've been active. For some reason, doing repetitive un-rational work like mapping relaxes me from my other brain-consuming activities. I had been mildly into cartography since I was a kid; I played around with GIS in college, but since I discovered Google Earth and Google Maps my perception of the world changed dramatically, and so with smartphones and the internet becoming more and more readily-available & popular in my country, I want users to be able to have more complete/useful information when using these services.

Hi Mappers,

I am V i s w a n a t h a n,  known more popularly on the net as \/ i s w a P r a b ha  or   V i s w a m.

I am an electrical engineering graduate of 1986 from a great college at my hometown Thrissur in Kerala, (which we all proudly call as 'God's own land' for it's own worthy reasons!). At present, I work in Kuwait. Until recently I was in the healthcare and scientific laboratory industry travelling vehemently throuout this country.

During the first six years of my career in India, I had the great fortune of continuously traveling almost every nook and corner of that great country. Right from the top to bottom and left to right. At times, I would be spending 25 nights every month in a moving train or bus.
That was a time, when there was no internet, (not even plain old telephones in most villages), no proper maps and not even a way of knowing which LAT/LONG you have ended up at any particular time!

Isn't it a good reason for me now, to jump into the GMM bandwagon when finally everything fell into place?

Since GMM was accessible to the public, I have been an active collaborating member.
I started with my very own village, then my district, state and the country, occasionally camping (concentrating on features) at one region for a few weeks. Particularly, I used to trace rivers and water features, forest lands, air ports, electrical HT lines, educational institutions and health provisions.

Between Google Maps and me, it has been a very successful symbiosis (No, they didn't sent me any checks), However, my ultimate loyalty is not to the corporate entity that is there, but to the common mass of all developing world (like India and Africa). I strongly believe that regardless of the way or extend our work output for the GMM mapping may be used for Google's corporate gain, every little mark-up there in GM will someday, in some way, help every poor family and their righteous government to make life a little easier and comfortable.

Thanks and Happy Map making everyone,
Viswam

Hello everybody.

I am Jabran Rafique. I am from Wazirabad, Pakistan and I study in Stafford, UK. I have been in one of the all time power mappers since 2008 and mapped mostly Pakistan but do moderation wherever possible. I and few other mappers from Pakistan sometimes join in hand together as "Team Pakistan" and take on some particular area or feature for serious mapping. One of the example was the mapping of all major road network (Highway, Motorway) throughout the country which took 2 of us nearly 6 month to bring it near completion. Also I worked on few mapping relief support projects (here, here and here - Omer, Faraz and number of other excellent people involved) which were basically based on the maps we create at Map Maker and it helped the humanity somehow and that was what I started mapping in 2008 so that it will help people one day. I also founded and moderate a group, a blog and a facebook fan page related to Map Maker in different ways.

Thanks for your time.

Hi all,
I'm from MYANMAR. Just founded map making, however, I've known this
since I've watch a wonderful podcast from TED.com, about map being
started doing by Users around the world when Cyclone Nargis hit
Myanmar. Thanks all of you for your efforts, and I want to contribute
some of my effort too. I'm an designer, as a designer my works has
been around with Sketchup Software since It's was announced. I'm a
user of 5+ years old, and I'm not amaze that Google bought it under
his wing later that. Because, it's been a really help with it's
3DWarehouse, newer Sketchup Pro 8 and Sketchup for free. Because, I'm
constantly making my models and 3d sketches with Sketchup, I've found
some of the tools that is available since Google took over. Ability
to export KMZ files, which I can locate and Plot on the Google Earth
program. So, I've turn this tools and started a company called mel
and co. (Creative Engineering), using Sketchup and Google Earth to
Design and Construct works. It's been a quite success since I've
imported Good Satellite Pictures with Google Earth Pro, Putting models
of 3D Home and Playground so I can show it to my clients, and they are
amazed with it. It's has been a success. So this is my pay back to
what is worth helping me build my works and my company.. I want to
contribute to community what I can. Thank you for all, and nice
sharing with you and Privilege to be working with you all.

Hi All,

My name is Ulzii who like to contribute Mongolian environmental data on the GMM.

I would like to add following feature categories to the GMM fit for Mongolian condition which is traditional nomadic life and booming mining issues of this country. If my request is posted on wrong discussion session, please forward it to the appropriate one.

1. Haymaking site

Description: Haymaking is a method of conserving grass for feeding cattle, sheep, goat, horse and camel through the winter and has been an important function of livestock for many years.

In Mongolia, high productivity grassland sites are establishing for the haymaking which has been designating by Mongolian government on local and state level.

2. Grassbank

Description: In Mongolia, the grassbank is a reserved grassland site for nomadic herders to share it during weather emergency condition such as long term heavy snow fall and drought years. Mongolian government has been designing many sites as the grassbank.

This feature will be helpful to map land use coverage.

3. Mining – open

Description: The open (active) mining is a site on ground or underground where implementing a mining project by mining company.

Ongoing mining project brings infrastructure and settlement to the site. The legend will be helpful to contribute features on the map.

4. Mining - Closed

Description: The closed mining is no more active mining operation on the site by mining company. Closed mining could be either rehabilitated or not habilitated.

If we use this category, it will be helpful to recognize environmental condition from the map.

5. Mining - Artisanal

Description: Artisanal mining is an established site by artisanal miners or small-scale miners who are not officially employed by a mining company, but rather work independently, mining or panning for gold using their own resources.

Artisanal mining site left deep hole, tunnel, and exposed chemical toxic which cause people and animal fall down to the dug hole and to be poisoned from toxic. If we feature it on map it will be very helpful to avoid unwanted accidents.

Hi Jhun,

I am S Pantig of Illinois-California.  I know you're new to this but on the left pane under Get Started, you can click on Help Center.  There you can type a topic like "Edit a map" and several useful topics will show up.  OR

Log in to your Google account, and click Maps.  Zoom in to map you created until "Edit" appears  and click "Edit" (right pane, next to "Print").  Click "My Edits" (left pane).  Click on title of map you created (left pane, under "Published changes").  A message box appears (right pane), click "Edit".  From "Edit" drop down/down arrow, click "Edit this place".  A shaded polygon comes up.  Zoom in "+" or zoom out "-" to get a better picture. As you zoom in, white dots/points appear on polygon's border.  Click & drag one point at a time and release to the location you want. Use "Pan Arrows" - the Up/Down/Left/Right Arrows (above Zoom In "+" symbol) for navigation.  Right-click to delete excess point/s.  When you're done, click Save (left pane) and you should be all set.

Hello I am Daniel Minsk (firemandan9) the Google Student Ambassador for NC State University. I am very excited about Map Maker finally being available in the US and think I might have gone a bit overboard trying to figure out the tools for the and requesting far to many changes quickly and without knowing what data is appropriate to enter. Already getting some feedback from moderators which is great, at this point it is frustrating that I cannot further edit objects I have started until they have cleared some level of moderation. I also keep getting tons of errors regarding intersecting existing objects which are a bit frustrating.

More about me I am an undergraduate in Material Science Engineering, and have been interested in the Google Maps project since I saw the ambassador summit presentation this past summer. I have llamas and alpacas at my home in Waxhaw and enjoying mountain biking and hiking on local trails.

I am again sorry for flooding the NC State map with very rough data, hopefully I can sort it out this weekend with others help.

Greetings!  My name is Michal Fox and I am the IT director for the Land, Buildings and Real Estate department at Stanford University.  Stanford has been very interested, and active, in updating and improving Google Maps coverage of the campus.  We are looking forward to involving more members of the Stanford Community in this effort through Mapmaker.

Hi Michael,
Please don't delete the big CAL I'm putting in the middle of your stadium. It's really a legitimate feature.

Add me to the growing Mapmaker community - I live in Washington DC and have been busy trying out Mapmaker for the past two days - although for some reason whichever Mapmaker servers I'm hanging off of this evening are running really slow (like all my requests are timing out slow). I'm sure it'll fix itself soon enough

Anyways, I'm a cyclist who bike-commutes to work every day, so getting the chance to contribute some of my local knowledge is rewarding.  There are a few things that Maps doesn't quite capture for some of the roads and trails around DC, so its nice to be able to update and hopefully get more accurate data out onto the screens of people who can use it.

Just make sure the tree logo that I am planning for Memorial Stadium at Cal gets approved.  ;)
