Apologies if this has been asked before.

I was having a mini-map up today and a couple of people's edits kept coming up as 'anonymous'. They wanted to know how to change it and I was stumped.

Since it's one of those things I did once (or never since some of the mappers had profiles) it's not something I'm all knowledgeable and experienced at.

Thanks,

Jody

Hey Jody,

Go to :http://places.google.com/rate and click on the persons name, and then you can edit the photo and name.

"Apologies if this has been asked before."

Actually, don't. This question has in fact been asked so many times, but the answer is so non-obvious (do it in Places, not Map Maker) that Google really should put up big blinking neon signs telling people how to do it. Or make it so that it's a dead-simple step in GMM. Maybe Google only hires people with 150+ IQs, but the rest of us have a harder time figuring stuff like this out.

I made a little tutorial on how to do this to send to my group but I'm sharing it here since this is a common problem.

These suggestions don't seem to work anymore now.  I get kicked into "local" which has all my G+ settings.  Yet I am still listed as anonymous in MapMaper.  Is there a new method of doing this?

That's new. I don't know anymore. I'll see if I can figure it out.

This article tells you how to change your profile. I have to admit that it is pretty counterintuitive.

I think the method must have been changed in a recent update to places. Places looks like it's tied to google+ now. The link in the mapmakerpedia article takes to to what is now google+ local and re associates all previous places content with your google+ account. Not with map maker & maps.

Not sure if this info is still required, but I finally figured out how to get this working again.

1. log into your account
2. click on you name in the upper right and click on the "Account" link
3. on the left menu, select "Profile and privacy"
4. scroll down to the bottom and click on "Sign in to Dashboard"
5. under the "Account" section, click on "Edit personal information"
6. Set you nickname.  This will be used on all of your edits.

Still not sure how to edit the picture, but this takes care of the name.

Wow, that's a pretty circuitous method of changing that information.  Then again, changing this has always been less than obvious.  This method does seem to work to change the nickname.  Thanks DdDave.

It's not a problem for me because my nickname is fine but, this didn't work for me. Maybe I needed to clear cache ect.

If it works for others a quick way to get there would be via this link: https://accounts.google.com/EditUserInfo

I just cleared my cache and cookies and no dice. I was mistaken. The edit Place nickname/photo URL isn't broken from the Dashboard, rather it returns the Google+ Local page. It doesn't redirect (at least externally).

Jody, good catch on the direct route, it worked fine for me.  My way is more of a scenic route, which may appeal to mappers :)

Scenic and direct are both good. Scenic give you more information for better understanding. Direct is good for the impatient and in a hurry. :)

I updated the map makerpedia entry with a screenshot to help make it a little more obvious for those new to mapmaker.

Hi! Jody,

Your tutorial seems only work for gmail account but not all google app account?

I believe, though can't confirm, that Google Apps accounts are different. I do not have an Apps account with Map Maker access, so I cannot provide a better answer.

It will likely not work with Apps accounts because Google+ doesn't work with Apps accounts with personal gmail. Its a big issue that Google promised/implied a fix for but nothing.

Thanks for figuring this out DDave, I tested it on an account that hadn't used Map Maker, G+, etc. and it works great for a newby too.

I think we need to make it clear in case a Google employee reads this; this is not a fix.  You cannot set/change your photo.  The only people that will figure it out are people that come here to search for it.  A fix is still needed.

Hello,

I think the goal of Google right now is to make EVERYTHING easy for beginners to attract many more users of our services.
Only I said well;)

I am also a Google Apps user on Map Maker so I can't change my profile. Should I just create a new Gmail account to use for Map Maker?

Or is it at all possible to change it to a Gmail account so that I keep my edits and reviews done in Map Maker?

For anyone that did not read today's announcement, you can now update your name and image through your Map Maker profile.

Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner, and select "My Profile" to access the profile page.  On the left side there are now "Edit Nickname" and "Edit Photo" links to change your info.

Have you actually tried? I did and you can't change the name or photo. So much for the announcement...

I was going to try with my test profile when I got home.  I didn't hold out much hope, as the Issue Tracker states resolved due to the FAQ being updated.  The FAQ was updated to tell you to follow the old process of changing it at Places.

I only got as far as checking out where to do it, but I didn't actually try.  You're right, the links don't work.

Oh well, we can still use the Dashboard/EditUserInfo method to change the name anyway.

You can change your display name here: http://goo.gl/jWWhH

Display name and your profile image can be changed now in the Map Maker profile Page itself.
