As it stands now, tollways, expressways (the kind with intersections) and freeways (only entrance/exit ramps) are orange. I think it would be a good idea to make tollways and expressways a different color so that it's immediately apparent that they're different from freeways. The colors don't matter to me, as long as they're not orange. What do you all think? Is this something that could be implemented?

Definitely. I remember long ago using print maps from the local auto club where the expressways were marked orange and the freeways were marked red. Then again, most roads were drawn in black instead of outlined white. Of course, let's make our colors a little different so we don't run afoul of the look and feel of Google Maps competitors, unless these colors are already standardized somewhere.

Totally agree.  In fact, if you look at Google Maps in Europe, it seems there already is a darker orange color which could be used for toll roads, but it is not employed in the US at all (or anywhere else Map Maker is available, it seems).  I've also seen green used on traditional print maps for tollways, but really any sufficiently different color could be used.

Map Maker would need a way to mark toll roads—that doesn't seem to be an option right now even though the attribute obviously exists because there are toll roads marked on the map.

+1 for green toll roads. That would definitely make sense. I've seen the darker orange roads in France, but I didn't know what they were until I translated the label (route à péage = toll road)! Green would be much more distinct though. It's much easier to tell green from orange than orange from darker orange.

Only issue with green is if you get a toll road going through a park or something. I would also argue that green is used by the traffic view to show a road is slowing smoothly, but yellow is also used and we have all these yellow arteries and highways running around, so.... yeah...

But I do agree with the original point of making toll roads distinct from other roads at a glance without having to read the (Tollway) label.

True. However there are many shades of green, and I'm sure they could find one in-between the pale park green and the vivid/saturated green that would work nicely.

Things is, Google Map Maker did have separate colours for each of Minor roads, Major roads, Regional Highway, National Highway, Expressway, Freeway (and they were called Secondary Road, Primary highway, Limited Access, Controlled Access) a while ago, till they started simplifying the maps and road colours.

This is a requested feature on the Issue tracker, the devilish issue 666 and 225.

Its same 'yellow' for Minor artery, Major artery and Regional highway !
It would be better to have distinguishable shades of 'web-safe' yellow color for each road priority.
eg. lightest yellow for lowest priority road to darkest yellow for highest priority roads.

Thanks

Actually, Major artery is different in other countries. It shows up as bright yellow. See  http://support.google.com/mapmaker/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1098056

If only it was implemented in the US.
