People have started adding residential buildings on our map.
I am wondering if this is allowed, prefered or not?

Hi,
It is OK to add residential buildings on Map Maker to indicate the
address without adding any personal information. Could you post the
link to a feature if you had any specific edit in mind ?

You can post a link by going to that place in mapmaker and right-
clicking "Link to this page" (Top right corner) and selecting "Copy
Link Location"(Firefox) or "Copy shortcut"(Internet Explorer) and
paste it here while you post.

Regards,
Map Maker Guide.

Showing residential buildings, whether single family dwellings,
apartment buildings, or anything similar, whether or not they have
addresses included in the individual features, shows the character of
the area. That is, residential instead on commercial, industrial, or
mixed. It's similar to showing villages without names in otherwise
blank areas.

Can the individual features be searched? Nope. However, showing the
features aids in visualization. To see how this works in practice,
look at USGS topographic maps that show buildings without addresses
out in the woods, useful as waypoints when hiking. Rr consider Google
Maps for the US, which now show land plots in residential areas
without addresses, though not the structures.

Consider also the case where one wants to travel from village to
village in some largely unmapped area. If small villages aren't shown
because they can't be named, then visualizing a route can't be done
using the map and one had to use the overhead imagery.

Ok, so the key is to specify the address but not enter any name for
the building?

In at least the case of Tokyo, the name of the building can be as
useful as the street address number (once you know the neighborhood,
anyway).

Some cases for consideration, assuming none have street addresses,
identifying:
--a "house feature" residence with a person's name, "Donald Duck's
House," sounds inappropriate.
--a "house feature" residence with a historic name, "Ashdown House,"
as with some places in England, sounds ok.
--an apartment-type building with a name, similar to "The Dakota,"
sounds ok.

This isn't meant to be authoritative, just to continue the discussion.

The rest of this thread goes on to talk about adding residential buildings regardless of valid address information.

Is this OK? Can residential buildings added be changed with address information by future editors?

I'm a little hazy on if I'm allowed to do it, so I thought I would ask before jumping in with both feet.
