Could fields for IATA and ICAO codes be added to airports?

Usual practice, by me anyway, is to add them as abbreviated names.

Hi everyone,

@Rich - The best practice for adding IATA and ICAO codes to airport features is not to add it. Because, no IATA code should exist without an IATA name flag.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,
~Rahim

Hi Rahim,
  But they're abbreviated names, right?  It's common practice to say, for example, LAX, not Los Angeles International Airport.  People say "LAX" without knowing anything about IATA.  NHK may have an opinion.

Hi,

@Rich: +1

@Rahim: I also use the same practice as Rich.
May you clarify: NRT for Narita Airport(Japan), EWR for Newark Airport(USA), ... are not Abbreviate names in English? Are no valid names on any field? -> Guidelines: Do not add it into GMM?

I saw some older edits(2009, 2010), some done by Googlers, with IATA and/or ICAO codes named as:
Language: 'empty' or English;
Type: 'empty' or Obscure or Abbreviate;

Also, some Airport features have the IATA and ICAO codes on the description field.

I also find important, and useful, to search on GMaps and find: "NRT" or LAX airport or even on Maps Mobile: "HKG Cat:Airport"; and get the POI listing/marker.

Thanks and regards,
JPF

I can state with assurance that there a lot of airports mapped with IATA names as "Abbreviated."  Glancing at NRT, MSY, and JFK, Google Maps practice seems inconsistent.

I've seen more than a few airports that have the IATA / ICAO codes set as the abbreviated name already..

Hi again,

@Rich and Dendros - Agree that some of the airport features have IATA codes added with the name type Abbreviated. But, we shouldn’t be adding adding these as Map Maker doesn’t have ‘Airport Code’ support flag and adding the mere abbreviation is incorrect.

@JPF - Older edits having name types ‘Empty’ or ‘Obscure’ for IATA code additions could be something added before the policy revision.

As for the airport codes added to the Description field, we can correct them.

Hope this helps!

~Rahim

If we don't include IATA codes, how is a user supposed to do a search on MCO or ORD?

Description is indeed a garbage can for all sorts of attributes, but the plain use of IATA code is name.  And the plain, common sense interpretation is abbreviation.

Just a second and I'll go across to In-N-Out Burger and ask people in the queue.

Ok, back.  Yup, they all agree with me.  None agree with Google.  What a surprise.  I tried to sign them up as mappers, but when they heard how everyday data elements are interpreted, they declined.

Report a Problem will add those codes, since I think the Google engineers do have the airport code flags in their backend. I believe I once saw the Help Center discuss airport codes before, but all trace of it seems to be gone.
