This issue was brought up earlier but it died due to lack of
consensus:
A- Local Road is withing a neighbourhood, locality or village.
B- The moment it leaves the neighbourhood, locality or village, it
becomes a `Minor Arterial'.
C- If it connects more than one neighborhoods, localities or
villages, it becomes `Major arterial'.
D- If it connects Towns, it becomes a `Secondary Road'. (towns have
many neigbourhoods or localities)
E- If it connects cities, it becomes a `Primary Highway'. (cities have
many towns with neighborhoods or localities)
F- `Primary Highway' further gets `Specialized Ratings' dealing with
`Access Criterion'.
G- The Final Assessment rests with the Local User.
Condition of the Road & Traffic are transitory, temporary, seasonal or
cyclic phenomenons. The only permanent criterion are the `Population
based human mass' defined in terms of neighborhood, locality, village,
town & city and the `Linkage Significance'. `Linkage Significance' can
include factors such as related to tourism, heritage, historical or un-
common or unusual geographical locations i.e. highest, lowest,
mountainous, desert, snow etc.
In short, a Map should be able to reflect & tell a story to its User
by just the look of it. He should require minimum deciphering.
The coulor of `Major Arterial' and `Secondary Road' are too close to
easily differentiate. Following suggestion is forwarded:
A- Local Road - White.
B- Minor Arterial - Yellow
C- Major Arterial - Brown
D- Secondary Road - Brown with a thin black line running in the
middle.
F- Primary Highway - Brown with thin black lines running on both its
sides.
