Is there a special way to name/type/prioritize a roadway that's a national/regional highway so that the correct symbol will show up on the road?

Take this state highway for example.  It shows the name on the road, but no symbol on the road showing the route number.

How do you get that to show up?

Google takes care of it once reported which has been done by you :)

Using the multi-segment tool and the "Edit road names" option, remove the existing State Route 438 name and add it back as State Highway 438 with a type of "Numbered Highway" (you can do this all in the same edit).  That will trigger the system to generate state highway shields on the route.

Note that it can take up to a day for the shields to render once the change is approved.

Is the same type used for federal highways too? or is that a different type?

Yes.  The system seems to attempt to parse out what you've named the road when it sees the "Numbered Highway" type.  If it can make sense of it and has a corresponding shield, then it will render.

Examples in the US:
  • "Interstate 95" (produces an Interstate shield)
  • "U.S. 1" (produces a US route shield)
  • "State Highway 55" or "[state name] 55" or "[state name] Highway 55" (produces a generic state shield.
If you're not sure how to name something, find a route nearby which is rendering properly and check its name for the correct format.

Only if the shields don't exist in the system yet for a particular region.  Google has to create them and set up the system to use them.  There are a few countries and regions which don't have shields and therefore will not render anything even when named as per the above.  My guess is that once Google gets a shield design set up for those areas, they will start showing up.

Thanks for the information.  As far as that road, I have to take a drive down that road to make sure it's named such.  I can't find any information about that highway number online, so I'm suspect about it.

Hello.

Do you know if the parsing proccess consider another language? For example "Rodovia Estadual" (pt-BR) instead of "State Highway".

I'd have to dig up the exact help guide/guidelines article, but I believe this should also work in the format "STATENAME ###"  Such as "Connecticut 438."

The article in the Help Center only shows specific guidelines for highways in the US.  http://support.google.com/mapmaker/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1098046

I do not know of any other guidelines for other countries.
