I have attempted to map some golf course.
On one the edits were approved and showed on the regular maps.
I attempted a second and third one and the edits show in mapmaker and are approved but do not show in the regular maps.google.com views.
I then went back to the first course I mapped and it is no longer showing in the google maps, it also only shows in mapmaker.
Anyone else have the same problem?

As long as it is in mapmaker, it should make its way back to maps. How long ago were these edits?

In a related question, I noticed that there are categories for Fairway, Green, Rough, Bunker, Hole, etc. Are we really supposed to map a golf course in such minute detail?

Steve - post a link - I'd like to see the level of detail as I'm interested in mapping one of my local courses.  Based on experience, 1) it can take a few days for everything to show on maps-google-com, and 2) I've recently had edits shown on maps disappear... think its a temp issue as many edits have been made since GMM was turned on in the US.

I found this one in the gallery, although he has not used the golfing categories; they were probably inspired by his work.

It was long enough that they should be there.
5/9/11 on Westview course.
6/1/11 on Iron Valley course.

Interesting that he used the type of Shrubbery for the fairways.

I've been getting into mapping golf courses since I noticed one being done with the (new?) Tee/Hole/Sand Bunker/Putting Green/Fairway categories.

I did the first 9 holes of my local course in mapmaker: http://goo.gl/W8xf0

I get a lot of satisfaction looking back at the result, I think the colorful, visual nature of mapped golf courses increases the sense of satisfaction over roads and most other map elements.

I have noticed that the "Golf Course - Hole" elements are not showing up in maps.google.com like it does in mapmaker. See: http://goo.gl/ZP0EU

Also, the ponds that are in the existing map data are crude and don't line up very well. I created new "Pond" boundaries but the old ones show under/unioned into the new ones even on maps.google.com. Is there a way to edit or delete the old ponds marked on the maps?

I noticed the android and iOS(iPhone/iPad/iPod) native maps apps do not (yet) show the new elements and/or my changes. Is that data slower to update? Mobile is one place the golf course data would be especially useful. I did notice that it shows up in the mobile web maps on those devices which puzzling that the native mobile apps have older data or fewer features.

Please post links to well mapped courses. I would like to see what others are doing.

Thanks,
-Mike

Here's another really well done one, not mine:

I tried starting to map one locally but the feature polygons weren't showing up above the whole golf course boundary polygon.

Mike - Nice work!  Did you use any techniques to line up the elements other than the Satellite image?  I've found it difficult to work in 'draft mode' since GMM won't easily show you what you've already created when mapping a new object. (Have you had any success with the image overlay tool?) - J

I think Golf Course - Hole is meant to represent the hole placement on the green rather than the entire "in-bounds" area of the course hole.  At first, I took your approach -- using a Golf Course - Hole polygon to map out the entire course hole (i.e. Tee boxes, Fairways, Putting Green, etc.) -- but in GM, that polygon only renders a small white dot in the approximate center of the drawn boundary.  This leads me to believe that it is supposed to represent the hole placement and not the hole boundary.  It's difficult to tell since, as you well know, "hole" in golf can mean two different things.

Just my take, for what it's worth.

I've only used the satellite imagery to do the golf courses I've worked on. I have searched for maps or diagrams on the golf course web sites but have not found to too much that's helpful. I used the KML overlays for hiking trails but not golf courses and no image overlays yet.

I think you are correct about the "Golf Course - Hole" being more of a 'point' object to be placed where the 'cup' is located. That's interesting since the actual hole/cup moves around the green on most/all courses. I guess putt-putt holes don't move the hole location. :-/

Well, I think there should be a parent boundary polygon category for each hole. It looks nicer and groups together the tees, fairway(s) and green. It is a little strange when holes have shared tee boxes and greens as I have seen a few times on courses.

I'm not seeing any bunkers in the example above.

I have approached mapping courses a little differently.

I see the fairways in satellite view as being lighter and the rough being a darker shade. I have tried duplicating that look.

Here are a couple examples.

Trilogy at Monarch Dunes: http://goo.gl/1kl3T

Cypress Ridge Golf Club:http://goo.gl/x1VDs

River Oaks Golf Course:http://goo.gl/WN6Pj

Meadowlark Golf Club:http://goo.gl/GJyL6

I have just started on these projects, so It will be interesting to see if this method produces the right end results.

Stay tuned!

This is good although... The rough by definition is the area between the fairway and out of bounds.  This is a feature I didn't add in my example. I am working on a new example now.  But basicly  first you would want to outline the area of play with the rough feature. Then on top of that add, the fairways then bunkers, greens , and holes.

Like I mentioned in my other post, that would be the normal work flow, but the features on top of the rough boundary have been found not to render correctly.

Maybe they could change the hierarchy of the boundaries if we request it.

That would help a ton in rendering more accurately.

I added that problem to the issue tracker here.   Hopefully it will get fixed soon.

Is it still possible for us to add golf course features? I seem to be unable to find these features in Map Maker, even though Canada does have some golf courses that have been mapped.

Use "Add a Place", search for golf and you'll get the "Golf Course - Fairway" and all the rest.  Drop the marker on the map and then select the "Draw Outline" button and there you have it.
