Linux repos nearly dead

apt-get update does work eventually.
but it is so slow that synaptic times out and gives up
before the google repos respond.

All the other repos respond to apt-get within 5 seconds,

then we get stuck for a long time at:

98% [Waiting for Headers]

after about 2 minutes the google linux repositories finally respond to
apt-get

synaptic is nowhere near that patient.
