This really sucks, Latitude is one of my favorite tools that Google has offered.  Will there be a replacement?

Earlier today, we announced that we will be retiring Google Latitude.

What does this mean for you and your users?

On August 9th, 2013, programmatic access to the API, including Location History data, will no longer be available.

End users will also no longer be able to access location data or manage Latitude privacy controls using your application(s).

Please notify your users of the upcoming changes and modify your application(s) if necessary.

You may find some additional information in this article.

Thank you for creating applications that use Google Latitude.  It's never an easy decision to deprecate an API, but we appreciate your understanding and continued support of our Google Maps APIs.

Sincerely,

The Google Latitude Team

Geez, this is a bummer. We've been working on an application, Chronos, that connects with Latitude to import and visualize your data, and going forward will offer Android users the ability to collect data ongoing, too, to replicate and extend the functionality of Latitude.

We're taking sign ups now, and would love to hear any favorite features or feedback on what's up there now:

Dear Google Latitude Team,

I'm really really dissapointed about your decision about turning down the entire Google Latitude. I'm everyday user of this application and while I'm abroad (especially with my Android Galaxy S3), and I'm continously using it to keep up my history record. It's perfect to remember where I have been 1 year ago at the same date and same time and now, you are going to cancel this. There were also a miles/kilometres bar counting how much did you travel and I was about half way to "moon"... really annoyed that I will be no longer able to take a look about it! I'm using Google Latitude more than 2 years so you can imagine that database means something for me, how many countries did I visit since this application, flights, most distant places... everything!

Instead of releasing final version (Latitude is on Beta since found), you are shutting down my most favourite Google application. Google, you are really killing all the good things... why you are constantly keeping up only to things good for masses??? Maybe Google Latitude didn't use so many people as you were expecting, but I was using this everyday!!!

Please reconsider strongly your decision to shut down this irredeemable application, because there are a lot of people who's going to miss this Latitude.

regards,
Rajmund.

I'm of the understanding that only Latitude and the API was  going way. Location History itself will still be available through maps.google.com/locationhistory. Just not programmatic access it. The Dashboard with the moon and airports and stuff is already at maps.google.com/locationhistory (/dashboard I think). The way I understand it is that this is staying.

But the ability to track friends via email address who aren't using Google+ is what's being removed.
