jfyi, I am on opensuse 11.2 and I installed w/o the 3.0 version. I have
no problem with crashing when initiating "Places" or any other object
that I have tried. My install was:
wine ./picasa38-setup.exe
period.

Let me get this straight...
I installed the newest version of wine (unused for anything as yet)(wow,
that took a long time!) and have downloaded picasa38-setup.exe. I'm
using slackware 12.1 instead of one of the more popular distributions.
I am increasingly gun-shy about installing updates to programs NOT
contained in tarballs or slackware packages.
I'm looking for reassurance. Can you give me any?

Thanks, Bev

If that was snide, it fell a bit short.
I was unable to locate a tarball at the website. Does such exist?
I USE linux, I'm not an expert. My live-in consultant, the long-time
(1965) systems programmer, doesn't deal with X or windows or even C++.
It's a moral thing :-) Accordingly, my comment: "I have always
depended upon the kindness of strangers."
Converting rpms to tgzs is iffy. Attempting to do a normal rpm -i
install invariably results in the inability to find libraries actually
included in the library paths. Installing rpms --nodeps is iffy. I've
never used any variety of debian, but deb2tgz likewise doesn't work.
I actually used the copy of wine that came with picasa 3 to run
'notepad' -- a pretty simple thing. That's the only wine success I've had.
What I really don't want to have to do is re-do all my picasa 'albums'
-- containing thousands of edited photos. Yes, I have backups. No, I
don't want to lose what I have even if I DO have backups.
I most especially do not want to go through my entire system to select
which subdirectories picasa notices/follows/ignores.
If you weren't being snide, I apologize. Never mind.
Cheers, Bev

you already have wine installed. You have no need for a tar-ball.
Install picasa 3.8:
wine ./picasa38-setup.exe
It will work!
I do not know why one would want to go thru the extra steps or *what*
that would enable/enhance.
for a screen-shot of a running picasa 3.8 installed as I noted above:

Maybe/Probably not, but not a big thing. You can always edit the menu by
hand or add an appropriate picasa3.desktop file to /home/<user>/Desktop, ie:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Picasa 3
Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/pat/.wine" wine C:\\\\Program\\ Files\\\\Google\\\\Picasa3\\\\Picasa3.exe
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Path=/home/pat/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Google/Picasa3
Icon=/home/pat/.local/share/icons/7acd_picasa3.0.png
note: the "Exec" line may wrap, it should end with "Picasa3.exe" (no
quotes).

seems like a lot of extra work and many possibilities for error to keep
from makeing a file with 7 lines of text.
And you end up with a dysfunctional program, crashes when trying included
functions :^(!

OK, you've convinced me that everything will be OK and that I will lose
nothing in the process. Tomorrow. If things blow up, though, I have
friends in Homeland Security and the NSA who wil be happy to do me a few
favors... :-)

the worst case failure would only require you to remove ~/.wine and then
reinstall wine (that is the simplest correction I can envision).
above only applies if you do the:
wine ./picasa38-setup.exe
installation.
installing picasa 3.0 first puts files in other places than ~/.wine.
Refresh my aging memory. How/what failed and what were the conditions?
Remember that generalities differ sometimes greatly between different
distros. Perhaps we can get your system up in a more straight-forward
manner and alter your blog instructions in a manner that work for nearly
anyone/everybody. Even people my age :^).
Nowhere did I deride your *system*. My comments were *only* about the
convoluted installation for picasa38 you present.
But, you appear content with your picasa install and uninterested in
alternatives. I have other things to do than to research bits and pieces
of a path you have detailed knowledge. Have fun!

One last comment, re: early days of linux, and I will go back to sleep.
My first linux install was a great man floppy disks downloaded at
7500baud and installed on i286 w/3mb onboard memory and a 40 mb hard
drive. Slackware iirc, but it was credited to Patrick Volkerding. I had
also tried minix w/o much appeal.
Patrick,
Can you trim your posts to only quote relevant material? Scrolling down
240 lines to see a short message is a pain.
Thanks,
Dan
I agree and apoligize. I normally do but get a wild hair when I reply to

As an aside, any idea what's happened to the package browser? Somebody
in Italy was doing it and then apparently was struck by lightning or
something...
