When will a release of Picasa that truly supports the x86_64
architecture be available? I am running RHEL 6 on which I run Chrome,
Googel Earth, and Voice and Video Chat, all using the true x86_64
releases. Picasa can be made to run in this environment, but only by
downloading tons of 32 bit dependencies. This is not a real solution.
I mean seriously, is there any excuse to run 32 bit anything anymore?

What version of picasa are you running.

AFAIK, there is no intention of developing a 32-bit version of picasa.

I believe that development has actually stopped on picasa as google
intends users to begin using their "cloud" applications, see google+

I also get this impression, Patrick - do you have any more direct evidence on this matter ?...

No, but google is not exactly forthcoming with their plans &:^).

I have google+ and they offer unlimited picasa albums (iiuc) and as far as
I have seen, free usage of picnik which appears to be very similar or
picasa except that it is a remote app.

google+ seems to be another/similar_to facebook/twitter/.... which I still
fail to see much use for except I am able to provide photo albums
privately at a much greater line speed than my local server. I also don't
have to worry about downtime. But I *am* still experimenting :^).

The guy in charge of Picasa (Web, desktop) is on Google+ (Brian Rose). He was the developer that is responsible for Picasa -->Google+ implementation. When one signs up with Google+, upon activation the Picasa Web is changed to be embedded within the new Google+ Profile and there are no size restrictions, in terms of overall size of the Picasa Web Albums at that point.

You kind of have to read between the lines. ;)

Stephen, before Brian was moved to Picasa, he was the community manager for Google Toolbar, where he did a wonderful job (and where I had the privilege of serving as TC) before the Toolbar fora were archived. My own reading between the lines indicates that both the Google Toolbar and Picasa are going to be abandoned (death by no more updates), a reading which seems to correspond to yours and to Patrick's. As the latter points out, Google is not precisely forthcoming about its plans, which means that we who are interested must perforce attempt to read between the lines. Alas, this is a difficult art, and erroneous readings are not unknown, which is why I asked if direct evidence was available....

Gotcha. Didn't Google announce the demise of the toolbar for Mozilla this week? Think so.

Indeed ? I seem to have missed that particular announcement (can you provide a link ?), but given that the Toolbar for Firefox hasn't been updated since 16 March, it doesn't exactly come as a surprise....

Well if you had posted that to the same article rather than start a new one I wouldn't have, as I read posts chronologically.

Well, Stephen, perhaps you might want to take a look at the manner in
which threads are displayed on your machine ; on mine, the PS was
displayed in proper chronological order on the same thread, directly
under my previous posting....

Thanks for the link, Patrick ; that was news to me ! But since I agree that all email clients suck, I always access my Gmail and these fora directly from my browser (various versions of FF, Chromium, Opera)....
