I'm using 3.0 and have made no updates to my computer since my last
successful upload. WTF is happening? Does google know or care? I see
guesses in this thread, not success stories.

If I download and install the latest wine to run 3.8 with, how will that
impact google earth? I seem to remember having problems with GE last
time I did a fresh install, and I really don't need any more trouble
right now.
If I can't upload to picasa albums unless I install 3.8, that's the only
reason I've seen for bothering to do the upgrade. Is that a sure-fire fix?

Yeah, it's free, we shouldn't complain, but you'd think that common
courtesy would suggest that google post some sort of down-time notice.

Not gonna do that unless I have to. I was just screwing around with
updating java and decided I could hold off on that for a while. And I
used to be able to see quicktime videos, but no more -- and mplayer
won't install into the latest version of firefox.

I accidentally looked at something with picnik. Godawful slow and it
does stuff I don't want done. It's like going to a website for
information about a product and being treated to dancing bears spelling
out the corporate name. Feh.
If the website doesn't get fixed, it's going to be a real bitch to move
my albums elsewhere. OTOH, maybe I don't need to. I'm pretty sure
nobody but me goes back and looks at the old stuff.

Addendum: I can go to the Picasa site and suck up pictures from my

it sucks up the captions too. Pull instead of push. It works, it's

Go to the picasa website and suck photos from your home computer.

I have the same problem. I would like to use Picasa without Wine but I
also have this isue: "Web Albums is temporarily unavailable"

Afraid you cannot use picasa w/o wine as picasa is not a compiled binary
for a linux platform, but a windows executable. Wine is *required*.

A version came with version 3.0 and google earth. I don't want to
download and install a newer version for fear that it will somehow break
google earth, which is kind of weird about installation anyway.

Go to your web albums on line and pull (I defer to the guy who prefers
'pull' to 'suck') your photos up. Crude but effective.

"We don't have to care, we're the phone company."
Google has provided us with a lot of nifty things absolutely free. I,
for one, am willing to give them in exchange whatever information about
me they find valuable. The fact that I don't even SEE ads, even when
they're right in front of me, coupled with the fact that I never buy
popular stuff, makes my information absolutely valueless -- but if
somebody is actually paying them for it, fine with me -- I'm definitely
ahead of the game.
A lot of people are getting paranoid about google, though, and I can
understand why. Security through obscurity doesn't work as well with a
really good search engine.

I'm not afraid of it, I'm just afraid of losing something through sloth
and ignorance that I have learned to need. I have solved many problems
through the scattergun approach, and have no idea what individual action
or, more likely, combination of near-random actions resulted in success.
I didn't take notes in school, either :-(

We were the product for TV too, but some people pay what I consider to
be big bucks for cable now. I had hit 1G in my picasa account, so I
opened a second account and started over. I should probably move the
public albums to this account and the private ones to the other account,
and then enable G+ in that one too.
On the whole I'm not impressed with what G+ has to offer. What it lacks
is a way to make stuff you've already read disappear -- just like usenet
and mail lists, both of which are far better than either G+ or Facebook.
Better Facebook is an improvement, but it's still not as good as
usenet, especially if you actually want to DISCUSS something instead of
just rattling off a one-liner.

"You folks"? When something important breaks, I think most of us try to
fix it. Should we just wait until god blesses us? As soon as the
problem was mentioned, it would have been nice if Google had made some
sort of announcement -- "We have a problem, we're working on it, hang in
there." "Temporarily unavailable" does NOT mean days or weeks, it means
minutes or hours.
One of the reasons I hate Charter is that they expect you to do a
machine diagnostic before they tell you 15 minutes later that the net is
out in your area. You can cut down the time, but it's NOT the first
thing on the menu.
