With picasa winding down, it appears that Picasa Web Albums are merging
into "Google+ Photos".... ??

Received the announcement this am that "Picnik", the supposed replacement
for Picasa 3, was disappearing and google was refunding the last year's
subscription to those using the payed service.

I notice that my Picasa 3.9 on linux, opensuse 12.1 via wine, no longer
offers a sign-in to Picasa Web Albums, only Google+ Photos. I can still
get to Picasa Web Albums by the direct url link:
http://picasaweb.google.com/home
but all the language is pushing to G+......

Does anyone see different

Well I warned everyone. It probably co-incides with Google announcing yesterday that to get a Gmail account (new signups) one is required to join G+ and fill out a profile before it will allow a new account to be activated.

I can still sign in to Picasa web albums and upload photos with Picasa 3.0 but not 3.8 never had any luck with 3.9.

With 3.0 it defaults to the g+ page and there doesn't seem to be a
'picasa' button at the 'photos' page any more; I have to log in using a
bookmark.

Unclean.

does this help: there is an upload button in the middle top of the web page "upload" when pressed will take you to another page with a launch picasa button on the right side of the page.  Not sure if this is what you mean but don't see a picasa button other than that.

Is the "launch Picasa" button perhaps referring to the desktop Picasa? That's what launch means to me ....

yes but you have to direct it to the picasa app or desktop but it does work I tried it just to confirm the process, it will ask you where the app is, I directed mine to the actual directory where the picasa app is installed.

Last week when I clicked on my picasa albums link it took me to the g+
photos page containing my picasa albums. There was a button (probably
in the black strip at the top) to switch to picasa -- not the desktop,
the picasaweb website. When I did that this time -- before I posted --
there was no switch-to-picasa capability.

I just tried my link again, and it went to the picasaweb site. Mysterious.

In Picasa 3.9, the upload to Picasa web albums button has been replaced by one that says «Share with Google+» - at least that's what I see (mutatis mutandi - Swedish is the default language on my systems) on my machines. However, when I click that button, the photo(s) is/are uploaded to my Picasa Web Albums, which seems to be integrated with Google+ (I joined Google+ when it was still in the experimental stage, but rarely use it, so my knowledge of how this integration works is vague at best). So far I haven't discovered any particular disadvantage with this arrangement....

The only REAL advantage of g+ is that you have unlimited free photo
storage as long as they are no larger than 2048 pixels (I assume the
langest dimension here, rather than total number). The only prolific
poster in my g+ group (containing people I've "known" via usenet since
the late 90s) is a guy who works for google now :-(

Neither g+ nor facebook has an effective 'I've seen that, make it
invisible now' function. The 'social fixer'' (formerly 'better
facebook') thing makes FB better, but not perfect.

Not like usenet...
