The new Persian translitration in google labs has many more features;
however, it no longer works with iPhone. When I go to Persian page
the keyboard does not apear on the iPhone and I can't type anything in
as before. This is a great function and I hope it is made compatible
with iPhone like the older version.

I agree. The keyboard is not appearing at all for any of the languages. It basically looks like the area for typing text is using ajax / innerhtml and is not a separate html <textarea> or <text>. Hence, clicking on it does not bring up the iPhone keyboard.

I request Google team to create a separate mobile optimized version of the transliterator. (just like the translator) It should not be much of an effort..provide minimal features necessary, use <textarea>, easy switching between languages and set appropriate viewport based on detected screen size (320 for iPhone). This will greatly benefit thousands of people (the number is increasing..) who mostly use smartphones for the internet.

On a related note, is anyone able to see Indic scripts rendered properly on iPhone 3G or 3GS?
Attached are examples from Hindi and Telugu wikipedia on iPhone...the 'maatraas' / 'vatthulu' in the unicode letters are not rendered properly.

+1, I too am not seeing the keyboard when I click on the area (that looks like text area) on transliteration page.

Yeah, I too find it rather annoying that the devanagari font is not displayed correctly. Does anyone know how to see the available fonts on iPhone?

Maybe we should use jqtouch to develop a similar app for iPhone?

Please check out these links about Devanagari on iPhone..

The apps may also not display the fonts properly, because the underlying unicode rendering itself is not proper. For example: There is an iPhone app called "समाचार" for Hindi news, and the fonts are similar. And the creators give this suggestion!!

"NOTE: Due to limitations of the iPhone, Devanagari script doesn't show properly and you may have issues reading certain words. But with practice you get used to it and it and reading becomes better."  (!?!)
