Can't directly add members

I am an owner and manager of the group. I have directly added over 100 members. Now for some reason I do not have the authority to directly approve new members. I can't figure out what has changed. I did change my personal settings to link to my Google account. Thinking that might be the problem I went back and unchecked the link box. When saved it was unchecked but I come back moments later and it is checked again.

Are these issues connected? Can you direct me to a solution? Thank you.

For me it was this setting that should have been "Either display name or Google profile"
