I compared google finance quotes for GOOG, MSFT, INTC and AAPL with
quotes at http://in.advfn.com. Quotes were delayed - may be by upto
one minute. The volume was also lagging which clearly shows that the
quotes are delayed. The same was observed for NSE stocks as well. This
was observed at all times even with continuous refreshing.

Hi Suny

It all depends upon your interpretation of real-time. I guess that
'real-time', to you, means without any perceivable delay, but
unfortunately within the mysterious world of IT the term 'real-time'
is all too often misused. Very few systems that claim to be
real-time give truly real-time responses, for this you require a
special operating system and programming languages that
support the expression of real-time event. The few systems
that are truly real-time tend to in the realm of defence and
financial trading.

"But this is a trading application", I hear you respond.
Not according to Google's disclaimer:

"All data ... is provided "as is" for personal
informational purposes only, and is not
intended for trading purposes or advice"

In this context a one-minute delay is probably considered
to be imperceivable.

Anthony

ps I'm not sure Google monitor this group or indeed if there
is much activity from its membership. I receive the digest
and rarely see a response, from anyone!

Hi Suny,

NASDAQ and NYSE last sale prices on Google Finance are real-time from
the exchange for trades that execute on those exchanges (ie no
intentional delay added by the exchange or Google).

The volume figures are delayed by 15 (NASDAQ) to 20 (NYSE) minutes.
This is from our disclaimer:

* Real-time price data represents trades which execute on the NASDAQ
and NYSE exchanges. Volume information, as well as price data for
trades that don't execute on those exchanges, are consolidated and
delayed by 15 minutes (NASDAQ), 20 minutes (NYSE).

You can refer to the list of exchanges that are real time vs delayed
here:

Thanks for the comments Dion, I think we have a discussion - a rare
thing on this board.

I think the phrase 'no intentional delay' is key to this and I restate
my opinion that 'real-time' is misused here. Clearly Google do not
intend to introduce a delay, if they have permission to publish data
without a delay then have an interest to present it as close to real-
time as possible. However, there are a lot of processes in between the
exchange and the user, such as application servers, web servers,
routers and browsers, each of which introduce an unintentional delay.
The sum of these delays is not strictly controllable by Google and
therefore, in my opinion, they should not make the 'real-time' claim.
Would it not be better to use descriptions such as 'live stream' or
'current prices'?

Just in case it isn't clear; my gripe is not with Google but with the
collective misuse of the term by a significant portion of the IT
industry.

This is important to us as well. Once we receive the trades from the
exchanges, they are sent out to the users in a matter of
milliseconds. We obviously can't provide the same guarantees as a
direct terminal with a dedicated line to the exchange, but it is free
=)

What I interpret here is that all trades on NASDAQ and NYSE are real
time - both prices and volume. For trades which are not executing on
these exchanges are consolidated and delayed (again both prices and
volume) by 15 and 20 minutes. I think MSFT is traded on NASDAQ and is
expected to show current prices and volume.

Further I dont think stock data with real time prices and delayed
volume (15 to 20 minutes) makes it usefull. It is same as data with no
volume.

What I compared was the data on two sites : google and advfn.com and
expected to match it closely as both sites are expected to have the
same network delay.
