I've been exploring using the spreadsheet functionality in Google Docs
to do technical analysis of dividend producing stocks. My idea was
that I wanted a sheet that given a ticker, an initial investment
amount, and the number of years invested it would calculate the
portfolio value including the re-invested dividends and then compare
it's performance against the S&P 500. I've gotten that far, but as
soon as it was complete I realized that I hadn't accounted for
splits. I'm trying to find any free or low cost online data source
that will give me the date of splits and the ratio. Format doesn't
matter as I am already using a python project hosted on Google
AppEngine to massage Yahoo Finance dividend data. Any ideas you may
have are appreciated.

As far as I can tell, Yahoo gives you but adjusted (for splits and
dividends) and raw, unadjusted data in their "historical prices"
function.

It would appear to me that the difference between the two is splits
and dividends.

Not sure why you want to distinguish between the two, but if you have
the one and you have the sum of the two, it would appear that you can
computer the other easily.

(Caveat: I haven't tried to tinker with any of this data, so I
wouldn't know what practical problems there might be. I'm strictly
speaking from principle here).

Note that the S&P 500 is not adjusted for dividends. Only "Total
Return" indices are adjusted for dividends, so you probably want to
compare it against the S&P 500 Total Return Index.

Best regards,
Richard Dale.
