Google Finance have finally made good on its intent to discontinue the old portfolio set up as I can no longer access my portfolios. However, it appears that you can create and populate portfolios under the new Google Finance. The instructions are:

  1. Click the Portfolio link in the left navigation bar of the Google Finance page.
  2. Click Create a Portfolio on the right side of the page.
  3. Name your portfolio, and click OK.
  4. You can click Add to Portfolio at the top of the company or mutual fund search result.
I can't do step 1 - no Portfolio link in the left navigation bar.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The answer is simply as complicated. The "online brokers community" push them to close their old page simply for the fact that they want to have you more "close" to their products, more close to your money. Less liberty for you as investor.
