Install will not complete. Error x80042194. I have tried all the
suggestions: BITS, permissions settings, firewall, not using a
proxy. Any other ways to download the plug-in? I'm using Windows XP
SP2, Firefox 3.0.5.

Hi Brian,

That error correponds to 404 (File not Found), trying to fetch
something during the install process. Which general geographic
location are you trying to download from?

Also, are you behind any corporate or government firewalls?

I'm in Orange Park, Florida... near Jacksonville. My ISP is Bellsouth
DSL.

I have a router, but that shouldn't stop anything. The only firewall
is Windows and I've added the Google Updater and Updater Service as
exceptions.

You know... as much as I *love* Google (yep, I'm a Googlephile)... the
whole updater thing is a little Big Brother-like. *Everything* is
hidden... I don't know where it's going, what it's doing, why it's
doing it, why every Google app I use has the same GoogleUpdater file,
and why Updater has to be constantly running and stealing resources.

Why not let us just download the doggone xpi file, like Mozilla does?

Why all the secrecy (for a company founded on transparency)?

Just saying...

Hi all,

Have you tried clearing out your proxy settings under Internet Options
in Control Panel? This specific error code is a 404 (File not Found),
meaning there is some middleman entity blocking the download. The only
other possibility would be a local datacenter misconfiguration, which
we ruled out on our end.

Other troubleshooting options would be to try downloading from a
different user account or a different computer entirely.

I have no proxy settings... never had. I don't seem to need them for
anything else on the Internet.

Again, I think part of the problem is that the Google Downloader is to
mysterious about what it's doing. I don't understand why it has to be
so anonymous. Why can't we just download the file directly?

Is there any debug mode or install log that can give a little more
info on what operation is being blocked?

I can download and install Google Packs fine, I can download and
install SketchUp updates, Google Earth, etc. all without a problem.
What is this particular plugin trying to do?

I can't help but think that it's a plugin downloader problem if none
of the other software has a problem downloading with my set-up.

Weird.

I love Google, but I'm starting to get a little nervous about the Big
Brother mentality that is starting to show. Reminds me of Microsoft.

Okay... a little more info. Thought I'd check my Application Event
log (why don't I do that first next time?): I have a warning and an
error. Not sure I fully understand either:

SOLVED.

Geez...

Just copy and paste the address from the Event message into the
address bar of the browser:

http://dl.google.com/earth/plugin/4.3.11528.8566/googleearth-plugin-win.exe

Downloads like a normal download. Ran the installer. No problems
with the install.

Problem must be in the method used by Big Google Brother in their
updater/downloader wrap.

Hi Brian,

From the error log it looks like it was trying to go through some
proxy though:

Trying config: source=FireFox, named proxy=http=127.0.0.1, bypass=.
trying BITS.
Send request returned 0x80042194. Http status code 404.

At any rate, can you double check your Firefox proxy settings? If
there indeed is no proxy at all, this is most certainly a bug in our
installer.

Now *that's* helpful...

An on-line "tip" on speeding up Firefox boots (which works very well,
BTW) is to add yourself as a proxy (127.0.0.1). For some reason this
speeds up FF... maybe prevents it from hunting for a proxy in your
system on boot-up.

So, that explains *why*, I already found a work-around, but I do
appreciate knowing.

Thank you very much, Roman!

B.

Brian,

If you have a link to the page with that speed-up tip, can you point
me to it? If it's a popular tip I want to make sure our installer
accounts for it.

Thanks!

What a strange tip. I'm quite surprised it does what it says... you'd
need to have an HTTP proxy server running on your local machine for
that to make any sense, heh.

Anyway, thanks for the link; I'll see if we can account for this in
our installer.
