I have seen a really impressive Google Earth route animation here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bux3rZb6ZQ0&feature=player_embedded#t=53

I wonder if there are any tools available to let the route "run" on
the surface like there
or if it is possible to do this with KML, or the Earth Com Api.
If such methods are available I wonder why they are not popular
because this
is the kind of route animation/ flight animation everybody likes to
see (IMHO).

Maybe the video was made by a melting together a Google Earth flight
with some
kind of video software?

Here's something similar: http://maps.myosotissp.com/

Or if you have your own route available somewhere in .gpx, .tcx
or .fitlog format you can simulate that:

Hi Mark,

Thank you. This is also a cool animation. It is done via
the Google Maps Api (?), so the programmer has the control
on what happens. However for a perfect presentation Google
Earth seems to have built-in functions that render the flight
more smooth. I would be interested if other
similar applictions have been yet developed.
Anyone knows them?

Hi Dirk,

This link: http://gaialab.asu.edu/Metro will take you to an example
that's done with the Earth API, using two kml files to set the path
that the trolly car rides on. Depending on your connection speed, the
trolly car 3d model can take a bit to load up.

I'm following this topic.
 Very important issue!

I've put together a site aimed at hikers/climbers, that builds and
displays in Google Earth+Maps a kml file with an automatically
generated flyover, from an uploaded gps route file in any format. The
heurisitics are fairly general and simple, slightly hard-tuned right
now for uphill foot trails, but could be improved and generalized
more. Give it a try!

Hi Dirk,

Another approach is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-PoX4Nx-so or
this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKm3AujvQuk.

This is all done in the plug-In using Java script.
