We use KML ground overlays and regions in GE plug-in to provide fast
loading of raster images for large territory. It works fine except for
one thing. Sometimes red crosses appear on the earth's surface. It
looks like this http://www.geosystema.net/samples/RedCross1.jpg.

I know the sense of this sign. It means that network link does not
work and GE plugin can not load the image. But if you open web page
with embedded GE plugin-in in other window or tab of the same browser
and zoom in to the same place you will see that red cross(es)
disappeared. Therefore needed images are present on the server.

Here is the link to our web page with ground overlays
http://www.geosystema.net/samples/Vinnitsa2.html. If you fly above the
city for some time you will notice the crosses I described above. I
checked this issue out in different browsers (including Google Chrome)
and different computers and OS (XP, Vista). Red crosses appear
everywhere.

Please, look at this problem and give me advice.

P.S. Thanks to Roman N the problem with russian names
http://groups.google.com/group/google-earth-browser-plugin/browse_thread/thread/f2b18722bf0ed531
is resolved in new versions of GE plugin. Thanks a lot.

Hi Alex,

It looks like an issue with your KMZ file at:
http://www.geosystema.net/samples/Vinnitsa.kmz

If you look into the doc.kml inside the file then you can see it
references URIs that are dead.
e.g. in "Гибрид" VinUTM.files/Hybrid/root.kmz does not exist...

At a guess the KMZ has other errors as well...

Regards,

Fraser.

Hi Fraser,

I know about dead link VinUTM.files/Hybrid/root.kmz I just forgot to
remove this link from KML. But as you can see the link VinUTM.files/
Photos/root.kmz is working and all subfiles are also present on the
server. You can reload a page with our map after you faced a red cross
and move to the place when the red cross appeared and you will notice
that it disappeared. So, an image is stored on the server but for some
reason it is not loaded. May be this issue is caused by timeouts. I
don't know.

Hi Alex,

OK I have tested this a few times and I think the issue is with the
server.
Just to note sometimes the entire page itself will not load at all...

Could you maybe try and host your KMZ file on a faster server, say by
uploading the file on to the files section of this site?
I think the issue is certainly with the KMZ calling the image file and
the server timing out as it tries to load it.

I will try testing it myself a bit more to see if this is the issue.

Regards,

F.

Hi fraser and all.

After much time of testing this issue I made some conclusions:

1. The red crosses mean that GE can not load the requested ground
overlay images. It is clear and had been confirmed when I turned on
error reporting in the GE settings.
2. The red crosses appear independently on KMZ sources. I tried to
place KMZ's on different servers (with good ping) and the red crosses
appeared in any case. Several times the red crosses were displayed
while loading KMZ's directly from my computer.
3. The frequency of the red crosses appearing depends on how busy GE
is at the moment of the loading KMZ's failure. When GE is rendering a
huge 3D scene the red crosses appear often.
4. Sometimes GE do not display the red crosses and do not report
loading errors but It can be seen that some ground overlay images are
not loaded.

So, how can I win this issue? Maybe I should use KML NetwokLinkControl
(minRefreshPeriod and maxSessionLength tags) to adjust connection
params? Should I report this issue as a bug or it is a normal
behaviour?

Hi Alex,

I've tried to replicate in the standard GE client but without success,
although I do see it within the plugin. To help isolate the issue,
can you confirm whether you see this issue only in the plugin, or also
in the standalone GE client?

Thanks,

-Josh

Hi Josh. Thanks for your reply.

I have updated the file http://www.geosystema.net/samples/Vinnitsa.kmz
, so you can open it in Google Earth desktop. The red crosses appears
in Google Earth desktop also, but it seems happening less often than
in GE plugin.
