I beleive if you install a specific version of standalone GE

you get the same version of the plugin too. 

(but may want to uninstall the current plugin, otherwise the installation, might not replace the plugin)

That is correct - uninstall other versions of Google Earth and Google Earth Plugin on your computer, then find the corresponding version and install that.
