What you are attempting to is referred to as a “Naked Domain”[1]. This is done by making a few changes to your DNS settings.
If your domain was purchased through Google Domains, you are able to use the features[2] that come with it. One of these features is Domain Forwarding(aka Web Forwarding)[3][4]. These allow you to point the “www” subdomain to the root.
Alternativy, you can see if your domain provider has such tools or alternatively you can modify your DNS settings to use the ALIAS or ANAME record type at the bare domain[5].
