I'm really considering running Istio in our dev-cluster, once 0.3 is out. But I'm relying on certain Endpoint features that will probably not be available in 0.3 of Istio.

Would it make sense to run them together (having yet another proxy in the same Pod?

Alex -

It probably depends on your timing. We are working on a plan that would allow you to swap the proxies and get all of the functionality that you are currently getting from Endpoints through the Envoy proxy, but exact timing hasn't been worked out yet.

In the meantime, having 2 proxies may be an option.

I'm leaving on vacation at the moment -- what is your timing for a decision? We could have a meeting about this.

Timing is actually in March. We have 3 country roll-out's this year and don't want to do it for our first roll-out (March). At that moment I want to introduce Istio in our development cluster in preparation for our next country (September). In that time we can battle-test it on our dev-cluster.

Hi Dan,

Anything ever come of this plan? I see the istio docs here: https://istio.io/docs/examples/endpoints/ -- but it still seems cleaner if this can work with one Envoy instead of Envoy + nginx/ESP sidecars.

We plan to use Istio on GKE with Endpoints this year.
