I've done 
gcloud auth login 
gcloud init
Ive tried using the making of the git credentials and cloning that way and I still get the same error. I really feel this is a lot harder than it should be -.- What am I missing

Have you installed Git before installing the Cloud SDK? The documentation states:

Note: You must install Git before you install the Cloud SDK in order to authorize access to Google Cloud Platform using the credential.helper script, as described later in this Quickstart.

You may need to reinstall the Cloud SDK for the credential helper to work.
