gcloud error while updating google-cloud-sdk on centos 7: gcloud crashed (TypeError): __init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'completer'

I'm running CentOS Linux release 7.3.1611 (Core) - installed from image provided by GCP. 

I ran a yum update and experienced this error: 

ERROR: gcloud crashed (TypeError): __init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'completer'

Here's more from the update ouptut:
