A new tab VMxxxx and an element id in the tab in dev tools. What does all this mean?

While running my webage, the debugger pauses at some new tab under Sources with a name like VM2376 and in it is an element id. That's it. No error messages or any kind of useful feedback to the developer. No messages in the console. I open the same page in Firefox and Firebug and the error message is that the element is undefined. Now that is useful.

I like to know what the this tab is all about and make it so that it gives meaningful feedback. I am running Version 32.0.1670.2 canary Aura

Is the error thrown within a code run using eval by any chance? that would explain the rogue behavior (but not justify it!).

you have flag "Pause on all exceptions" enabled and
the debugger stops right before the exception,
as a result you see no exception record in the console.

See screenshot.

Tim.

Tim, in my experience your example is a favorable case. In general the UI for pause on exceptions is inconvenient: first you have to notice that there is even an error, there is no UI:

Usually the stack is open so you do see that there is an error. But to read the message, most of the time you have to hover over the message and wait for the tooltip:

The whole point of pause on error is to see the error quickly, fix it, and rerun. Having the error message show up without UI operations would be a huge improvement.

About the VM pages, I gather they basically mean "Devtools can't find a file matching the function with an error, so its reading the source out of the Virtual Machine (VMXXX)."

Yes it turned out to be an issue with an eval.
