With the latest chrome update, I am experiencing a bug where if I have the dev tools attached on the right side and I inspect an element on the page, the browser window resizes to be wider and narrows my dev tools. Not a huge bug, but an annoying inconvenience nonetheless.

Solution for now seems to keep dev tools detached.

Which platform and version of Chrome are you seeing this on?

Sorry, forgot to describe my setup.
I'm using Chromium 26.0.1410.65 (193261) on OSX snow leopard (up to date).
Same behaviour using it on Mountain Lion (up to date).

Oh and by the way, the dev tools are docked on right.

I'm not able to reproduce with a similar setup. Does the problem persist if you start Chrome with a new user profile (http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=142059)?

I'm also seeing this problem.

The issue persists with a clean user profile in Chrome and also occurs in Canary 28.0.1480.2.

Here's the issue on crbug.com for anyone interested. Thanks to Paul Irish for pointing it out.

I am having the same problem and since I am doing a lot of responsive web development it is a huge annoyance. It does not happen all of the time and I am still trying to narrow down exactly what conditions must be met in order to make it happen. At first I thought it only happened when I had loaded the page with dev tools at one size, then resized, then inspected but I have since disproved that theory.

I am on Chrome 26.0.1410.65, OS X 10.8.3 MBPR, Dev tools docked right.

Same here.

Dev Tools to the right, drag dev tools left edge to the left to simulate a mobile window, right click and inspect an element, and I lose my window stretching effort.

Best workaround I've got is to inspect by navigating the dev tools dom tree to find my element.

I'm seeing this too. Chrome 26.0.1410.65 with dev tools docked on the right.

I have the same issue. In my case, however, I only noticed it recently when switching to a new Mac that has a retina screen. I don't know if that has any implications or not, but on the previous Mac I had not run into this. Of course, other things (chrome version, etc) may also be in affect.

Experiencing this myself for as long as I can remember. Version 28.0.1500.71 of Chrome on 10.8.4. I have just learned that if you hit the spyglass tool ( http://cl.ly/image/333G0k3m3Q3I ), selecting an element will not make the viewport shift. You can also invoke the spyglass by hitting command+shift+c (on Mac). But if you right-click on something in the window and choose "Inspect Element" it shifts. Super annoying.

Even using the spyglass tool seems to cause the issue, but it's random. One thing I have found that works is to set your size then close and reopen the devtools. Still annoying but one step as apposed to constantly resizing.

Thanks for the tip, yeah it's a good workaround until google cleans this up (I'm experiencing this in chromium on ubuntu)
