Improving layout time & automated measuring

Hi,

We're looking to improve the "layout" time when our page renders. Are there any pages which provides details about how to do this? And is there a number somewhere defined as "best practice"?

Also, we'd love to be able to run tests to show this metric improve. Is it possible to grab the total layout time directly via JavaScript?
