Tab breaks in chrome when opening Dev Tools on OSX

Very often (75-80% of the time) when I try to open Dev tools in chrome, I get an empty console and after that the tab is completely broken. What I mean by that is that I cannot close dev tools for that tab and or Navigate to a different page. I am using macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 and Chrome Version 63.0.3239.132 (Official Build) (64-bit)

It's extremely frustrating as it makes it almost impossible to use Chrome for development. I have tried many solutions, including installing Chrome Canary and working with that but nothing has worked. I don't have this problem with Firefox or Safari... I have already filed a bug report but have heard nothing and the situation has not improved
