Hi Everyone,

We are coming up with our first batch of Chromebooks end of life.
My question is - what are you all doing with your old model Chromebooks once the Chrome OS stops supporting them?
Any suggestions re recycling?
Seems such a waste when they are still working ok.

Kind regards

I have about 40 that went end of life last year.

They are still in use in the classroom. I'll run them until they die.

Not really End of Life, Google uses the acronym AUE (Auto Update Expiration) date meaning they will stop pushing updates but the devices will continue to operate fine until you come across a website/chromebook app that requires you to use a chromeOS version that is beyond the version on your device (a bit like ipads that keep running installed apps but you can't install new apps because you need iOS12 or the Win7 box running that 32 bit app in the corner that was never released for Win10 but still runs fine in a DMZ )

And also, Cloudready has installation instructions for installing their software on ChromeOS which, although I do not recommend installing on a Chromebook without careful investigation, may be an idea to tuck away for further down the track when troubles arise.

We run 1:1 Chromebooks and keep the old ones as loaners until they’re dead. Even then, we often repair them with parts we order in from the US.

Good morning all from cool but sunny Bathurst NSW......

Just a clarification on Neverware/CloudReady.

It is not software to install on existing Chromebooks however...
"...new life to your existing PCs and Macs (up to 10 years old) while reaping all the management benefits of the Google Admin console  "
It turns other devices into Chromebooks.

We have done this with some HP Streams and other devices, and it is working fine.

Kind regards

Vickie

My bad Vickie,

I was reading the Installation "Preparation" instructions rather than the Installation instructions.

Hi Andrew,

A timely post.

I found two old Chromebooks delivered in May 2013,  the other day.

They hadn't been started in a long time.

I fired them up with no problems and saw that both were on on version 53 (32-bit) of Chrome OS.

They both updated in a few minutes and are now on version 74.

That's newer than the OS on my Pixelbook which is currently on version 73 (64-bit).

They are both completely usable.

Got to love that!

Regards,

Frank

This is exactly the question I've had lately, so thanks for posting and thanks for the responses.

I have one more question, I only knew about this problem because of an email sent to me. Is there a way to see when these devices are at the end of update life? Is this information in the Chrome management?

Yours sincerely,

You can search for your device on the Google Auto Update Policy page here :  https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en

Hi All
Yes in google support - is the details for the model end of dates.
But it would be great in the Google Admin section: chrome management: devices: to access a report of those due to expire.

We have now received an email for Google Support that some of our devices are due to run out Dec 2019.
But not to access a report on how many or which ones.

Robyn

Chromebookinventory is a great sheets addon for exporting your chromebooks and analysing the data. I've also got a table of our 8 model types with their relevant AUE date and there are 130 next month. - Interesting.

Frank - that sounds like good news.

What model chromebooks were they? I'm wondering whether they are past their AUE date since they are 2013 models.

Hi Andrew,

They are Samsung XE303C12. They were part of a very early batch of Samsung Chromebooks in Australia.

The build date is March 2013.

Frank

Their Auto Update Expiry is listed as July 2018 so I suppose the hardware is still okay for running the latest ChromeOS for the time being.

There is still hope then for my HP 14" and 11" models for the rest of the year.
