Students ByPassing Youtube

We have Youtube set to only allow approved videos when on our domain with network level restrictions, however have had an issue where students have found a way around this following the procedure below

1. Beforehand, at home log into YouTube using a non-school google account and subscribe to channels that would be restricted at school.
2 At school, login to YouTube with your personal google account.
3. Go on subscriptions and then you will have all the videos that you want to watch in your subscription feed.

Has anyone else come across this or found a solution?

I’ve also been looking for a resolve to this problem. Any ideas surrounding this would be great. I have heard that Single Sign On could facilitate this?

Most decent web filters (with the use of a proxy) can be configured to prevent signing into personal gmail accounts by locally whitelisting your domain.

If you are using chrome-books lock it down to your domain only and disable incognito mode so they can only use the school google account, this can also  be achieved via the google chrome policies for AD but doesn't help with IE or other browsers.

We have seen the same issue.

Locking down the Chromebook to domain sign in only does not fix the issue, as they sign into the Chromebook with their school account, then into Youtube with a private account.

Incognito mode it disabled here, but they don't need it to get access. Gateway firewall does not work for us correctly either, as many items are only filtered on access (so they sing in outside school).

Gateway filter rules also apply to a user (not to the web page or service they sign into) which can 

Layer 7 filtering at the edge can be the best solution.

If you're not signed into one of our GaFE accounts at our site, you will get restricted mode YouTube. Once you sign in, YouTube knows which group you're in and provides one of:

• Restricted
• Moderate Restricted
• Unrestricted

Antony, this is what we are using. 

The problem comes when students login with a non GAFE account which is still a google account. They then are able to access their playlists.

Have you found a way to stop them logging in to google with a non GAFE account on your network?

Our internal Internet filter (Sophos UTM) can block non-domain accounts but we had the problem where the students would switch over at home and then bring it to school. Our security related settings include the list below. They seem to restrict YouTube. 

Device Management > Chrome > User Settings

• Whitelist which apps students can use, this prevents extensions designed for proxy use or games, etc
• "Show Password” Button -> Never Show.
• Incognito Mode -> Disallow
• Browser History -> Always Save
• Safe Browsing -> Always Enable
• Malicious Sites -> Prevent
• Data Compression Proxy -> disable
• Safe Search & Restricted Mode -> Always Safe Search, Always Restricted
• URL Blocking (Stops them changing Accounts at home)
• accounts.youtube.com/accounts/Logout2
• accounts.google.com/AddSession
• Multiple Sign-in Access -> Block

Device Management > Chrome > Device Settings

• Forced Re-Enrolement -> Force
• Verified Access -> Enable for Content Protection
• Guest Mode -> Do Not Allow
• Sign-In Restriction -> *@thornlie.net (Our Domain)

This seems to work well for us.
