Hi Everyone,

our students are getting clever and using proxy servers - detailed below - to access blocked sites;

-Unlock My Web – http://www.unblockmyweb.com/ Proxy Site – https://www.proxysite.com/ Hide My Ass – https://www.hidemyass.com/ Proxify – https://proxify.com/ (3 days trial) Free YouTube Proxy – http://www.youtubeunblockproxy.com/

What are all the schools using?

Thanks
Robyn

Does your internal school filter have the ability to block proxy services?

We have the Lightspeed Rocket appliance for filtering our school.  Works really well (even with authentication on Chromebooks) and has a whole blocking category dedicated to stopping these sites.

We use fortigate unit what does all our filtering/firewall/routing. Fortigate is pretty cool since you can even allow facebook but block facebook messaging etc if needed.

I might also need to mention  - this is with Chromebooks on our Google Apps for Education.
We block certain sites on the Blacklist through our Admin console.

However, they just Google Proxy and find a free proxy site to use to access sites blocked.

We are small in number but several sites - so looking for value for money solutions that will still work with Google Apps, Hapara etc.

If listing what works for you - can you add estimate of costing also.

Thanks
Robyn

Hey Robyn

It is a cat and mouse game unfortunately, glype is another example of a php application hosted on various web servers around the place, often on host urls that are classified as business or education, or google appspot

Kids also like to use translators such as Google translate, visit Facebook in another country and translate it to English lol. What do you do in these situations? You can't block everything.

And if your school or districts proxy service does not do SSL scanning or you have SSL scanning disabled due to the complications that arise from it, it is really hard to keep on top of. You really need a proxy service that can scan the content of a site and look for keywords and decide if it is worth blocking or not, can't rely on just categorising URLs into categories.

We are familiar with both Zscaler and Sophos web applicance in our schools, both have categories for proxies and translators which work 'reasonably' well, but the kids keep finding different ones to use, especially in the boarding campuses.

We do our best with the tools we have and anything past that it has to be a classroom management issue.

An interesting conversation to be having :)

Hi Robyn,

You might want to look at implementing OpenDNS on your network and blocking proxies for everyone. We use OpenDNS here to block the "Academic Fraud", "Pornography", and "Proxies". Because OpenDNS applies blocks for everyone on the network, it works well for these categories. Our main web filter is an iBoss (Phantom) that allows very granular control of categories like proxies based on user groups, etc. With both systems blocking proxies we have zero problem with them.

Hello Robyn,

We use Zscaler with SSL inspection active to deal with this issue at our College. So far its worked well in identifying and blocking this traffic. I wish you luck in your endeavours.

Yours faithfully,

If you are in NZ and connected to the N4l, contact them via the helpline.  They will ensure your filtering includes proxies.  Additionally you may wish to request ldap integration.  In NZ at least a compelling business case for fortigates etc does not exist if you are on a N4L connection.  The cisco router and scansafe combination can do most if not all of what a fortigate will IMHO, and for no upfront cost to schools.

Amazing how students change their behaviour when browsing activity is logged against them. Currently, we can open our user Dashboard and see a user's attendance, Naplan history and behaviour. It would be great to see "sites visited" and as we discover anonymizer sites, display these visits with special prominence (because if a student is using these, it almost always means they are upto no good...).

We had a system that did this and students (and staff) would come to me sweating that a particular URL is stored against them. I would always say "One or two visits can be written off as an accident.. But if you are there 10 times a day or 10 times a week, its hard to claim it was an accident".

And it was so powerful during parent interviews to call up:
  1. Attendance
  2. Behaviour
  3. Results (A-E)
  4. Sites visited
Cheers

Robie
