I just started working with the map chart API for a client-side plugin
I'm creating and the first thing that dumbfounded me was the lack of
North America ..

http://code.google.com/apis/chart/types.html#maps

I would really like to understand the motivations behind the decision
to *not* use established standards.

It's been a while since my last junior history class but back then
Americas were composed of South America AND North America .. not
South America and U.S.A.

Did I miss the ceremony where North America was replaced by the U.S.A
or maybe I just didn't get the memo ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas

With your API it's possible to set the area to any continent *except*
North America. We can only get the U.S.A, which exclude Canada. This
makes no sense at all.

It's also a bit frustrating that the 50 states are available for the
U.S but not the seven provinces and three territories composing the
Canada.

Regards.

There is 10 provinces in Canada, FYI...

But ya, there is a big problem with the API, USA != North America

It also seems to have entirely left out Australia, unless that's no
longer a part of the world. Might've been the same memo where they
changed North America into USA.

10 Provinces and 3 Territories, just to point out something that a LOT
of people forgets about Canada. I'd say almost half of Canada is
composed exclusively of those territories.

I think that the problem is that there is a potential for
misunderstanding when referencing North America. For many, North
America consists of Canada, USA, Mexico and the countries of Central
America. For some, Central America is excluded. For others, only
Canada and USA are considered because Mexico is thought to be part of
Latin America. Lastly, when I spent time in Uruguay, they always
referred to me as "norteamericano" even though I--being uncomfortable
with the ambiguity myself--always introduced myself as
"estadounidense." I don't think Google is trying to "diss" Canada or
any of the other countries in North America; I think they are just
trying to avoid confusion. After all, all you have to do is choose the
individual countries in North America that you wish to target; it's
not like Canada, Mexico or the others are excluded completely.

That's just my best guess.

I just want to reply so I can be seen on Reddit.com. Hello everybody
from Reddit! :)

And by the way, Canada is too insignificant to be mentioned in North
America, so it's just USA now ;)
