AppointmentWriter or SchedulePlus writer

Hi

I am looking into setting up the calendar web and sync services for
our pilot. I and am trying to understand for the sync service whether
to use the AppointmentWriter or SchedulePlus writer option. I believe
it has something to do with whether your pilot users have Exchange
mailboxes or contact objects. Can someone please advise what is the
recommended option. In my scenario my pilot uses would have mailboxes
on the Exchnage side.

Hi Eric,

You're correct about the difference between the SchedulePlus and
Appointment writers. The SchedulePlus writer writes free/busy
information into Contact objects, and the Appointment writer writes
into user mailboxes. So, for your scenario, the Appointment writer
would be the one. You should be aware, though, that the Appointment
writer is an experimental feature, so if you deploy it you should be
prepared to do some debugging. Based on customer experience in this
forum, the SchedulePlus writer is more stable. So you might want to be
ready to fall back on that. But you should definitely try the
Appointment writer and see if it meets your needs.

Will give it a try. I have existing Exchange users and want to put some on gmail as a pilot so don't really have the option for using contacts.

I have setup both the web service and the sync service (with
Appointment option) today and they both seem to be working
beautifully.

Something I noticed today is the sync service seems to stop working
after a while. I noticed when the log file time stamp stopped
changing.
A restart of the service fixes it but it happens again after a few
hrs. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Hi Eric,

Have you checked the Windows Event Viewer to see if anything's showing
up there? You could also try running the Sync Service in the debugger
to see if any odd exceptions are getting thrown. (You might have to
filter out a couple that happen regularly.)

Nothing in the event logs. I have turned on debug level logging and will wait and see how it looks when it stops responding again. Right now the only odd thing I can see is an event for access denied on my gmail admin account:

This message ("Appointment access denied") occurs when there's a
failure accessing the Exchange calendar. This is probably an expected
error since the Gmail admin account probably doesn't have an Exchange
mailbox. I'll be interested to see what you get with debug logging.

Ok that makes sense. Since turning on the debug logging yesterday the sync service has not stopped working again...:)) Go figure!

Hi Eric,

Looking at your logs, I still don't see anything that could explain
the crash. Mysterious... looks like it might be time to break out the
debugger. What I'd probably do is attach a debugger, break on
exceptions, and then disable breaking for all the exceptions that you
already expect, like System.Net.WebException. You might also try
adding some logging statements, for example in
GCalExchangeSyncService.cs to rule out the possibility that the
service is exiting normally for some reason. It may be that there's
something on your system which is interacting oddly with the sync
service; we just have to figure out what.

What I've done in the meantime is setup a batch job to restart the sync
service every 3 hrs and this seems to have solved the problem. Will see
how it goes and if I need to go down the further debugging path.
