I sync'd my breakpad repo to latest (commit 1c3f8d100238029ec47444e75d4ba412cb9471f3) and when I try to dump symbols for one of the applications, it errors out with a Segmentation fault.

I tried to gdb into the program but the callstack is cryptic:

tarting program: /home/breakpad/src/tools/linux/dump_syms/dump_syms Output/clang++-3.9/Debug/RegionServer/RegionServer

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x00007ffff7b33e25 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6
(gdb) bt
#0  0x00007ffff7b33e25 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6
#1  0x00007ffff7b33e2a in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6
#2  0x00007ffff7b33b96 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6
#3  0x00007ffff7b36527 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6

It dumps symbols without error for other applications, but I am not sure why it is not working for this application. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I am running on linux (Debian-Jessie 8). Not sure what else I can share that would help ?

you should install debug symbols for the system libs and make sure you build breakpad with debugging and then see if gdb shows anything useful

Is there a flag I can pass to `make` which will build breakpad with debugging ? Also, my binary is built with clang++3.9 => could that have anything to do with it ?

That helps. With the debug symbols for libstdc++ and breakpad compiled with -g -O0', I get the following callstack:

Looks like cp-demangle.c is not within breakpad directory. What am I missing ?

d_print_comp/cp-demangle.c come from the GNU libiberty project which is bundled with GCC:

is that the full backtrace ?  i'm not seeing where it leaves breakpad and enters the libstdc++ land ...

I attached the full callstack. It looks like infinite recursion from callstack.

If you scroll to the very bottom of the stack there is the entry into d_print_comp()

Meanwhile, I will try and figure out how to install the libibertry project.

Thanks

looks like some debug info in your project is making the mangler unhappy

does this work ?
  readelf -sW .../RegionServer | c++filt
it should largely be using the same code as libstdc++ to demangle symbols.

either way, at this point, i suspect the bug isn't in breakpad but in libiberty/libstdc++.  you seem to be using old releases of programs though, so the issue might already be fixed in newer versions.  you could check the gcc-...@gcc.gnu.org mailing list for help.

libiberty is a fun code base.  it gets statically linked/duplicated in a bunch of GNU toolchain projects.  so while you might have it available as a system library, GCC will have its own old forked copy that links directly into its own libraries (like libstdc++).

breakpad doesn't use it directly either.  i think the call-chain you're seeing is breakpad calling into libstdc++ which has libiberty bundled directly.  probably this bit of breakpad code:
src/common/language.cc:
class CPPLanguage: public Language {
    char* demangled_c =
        abi::__cxa_demangle(mangled.c_str(), NULL, NULL, &status);

so look at your backtrace and see if you can find the string that's getting passed along.  then write a small C++ program that makes the same abi::__cxa_demangle call with that string and see if it goes boom.  if so, you've got a bug to file with the gcc people :).

Hi Tony,

Yes - After much investigation, turns out I was using an older version of debian/GNU. The issue was not with breakpad. One of the debug symbols were not getting demangled and that got fixed when I tried to compile/build everything with the latest version of GNU libraries.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tony,

Yes - After much investigation, turns out I was using an older version of debian/GNU. The issue was not with breakpad. One of the debug symbols were not getting demangled and that got fixed when I tried to compile/build everything with the latest version of GNU libraries.

Hope this helps.
