Opened gmail account and bookmarks disappeared!!

I opened a gmail account today and now all of my previously saved
bookmarks are gone. My home page also looks different than it used
to. Is this related to the gmail account, or is it a coincidence and
due to some other Google problem? Please help!! Thanks.
