New issue 94 by patrick....@gmail.com: [Suggestion] Widget support
http://code.google.com/p/google-authenticator/issues/detail?id=94

Pretty self-explanatory, I think it would be nice to have a home screen
widget that displays the code.

To be a bit more specific, I would like to be able to click "add widget",
then "Select account", then have a 4x1 widget that shows the code for
selected account.

(Sorry if this is not the appropriate place for suggestions. I couldn't
find anywhere else to post this.)

I forgot to mention, basically, I would like it to function more or less
like verisign's mobile app's widget.

Thanks for the suggestion! The good news is that such a widget is on our
short-term road map already. The bad news is that we can't give you a
precise date yet. I'll keep this issue updated.

I think it should be able to fit in a 2x1 widget just fine (although I see
no reason to exclude an option for a 4x1 widget as well if it's not
terribly complicated to do).

Blizzard's Battle.net authenticator has a 2x1 widget that displays the
authentication code -- when it gets to within 3 seconds of expiring, the
code turns red. A (better IMHO) UI would basically have a
progress-bar-type background or a thin progress bar line beneath the code
that "drains" towards the left as the code nears expiration.

Addition of the widget, in combination with another app like WidgetLocker,
would also serve the purpose of providing authentication on the lock
screen, reducing the amount of interaction required to obtain the
authentication code - in most cases, turning on the phone's screen would be
sufficient.

Attached are two sample interfaces for a 2x1 Google Authenticator widget as
I described above, as well as a (partially censored) screenshot of the
Battle.net authenticator.

If my vote counts for anything, I like the retreating background, but I
would go with a different color (blue maybe) and, personally, I would
prefer it to retreat to the right, not the left - but whatever.

Another possible feature would be that the widget does not display the code
by default. You would need to click on the widget to show the code.

FWIW (especially coming from me (who you say? exactly)) Let's make the
background (and foreground) color configurable so that it can be better
matched to anyone's home-screen color scheme. I don't have a strong
preference for the countdown UI. It could simply fade away over the last
10 seconds, or use a progress bar, or use color changes. Really looking
forward to availability of this widget.

+1 to KPO. I don't want to sound ungrateful - I understand this is a free
product and I wouldn't expect the developers to do anything that requires
extra effort or do anything they don't want to do, but I do agree that a
widget would be awesome.

The code for the widget exists. It's a little buggy but it works. The only
changes you have to make are to uncomment the widget related stuff in the
AndroidManifest.xml

Patrick,

http://code.google.com/p/google-authenticator/source/browse/mobile/android/AndroidManifest.xml?r=e7cc1a142bcd36ad5a460750dc5cb5b0a77af6d3
I see commented out Widget code that when uncommented out just works (with
some issues). This was prior to the move to the new look, which they
apparently removed the widget code though.

I forked both versions of the project to add Smart Watch support. A side
effect of the original project is that I enabled Widget support as well.

You can check the change log, to prove that I haven't added in anything to
steal your pins.

issue with android in the past couple days, I was wondering if we expected
to see any progress on a widget.

I'd point out that the use of WidgetLocker would alter the security of the
thing pretty significantly. I mean, I guess it's not _that_ different from
the SecurID I wear with my employee ID at work, or the bank card in my
wallet--they're the something I have in "something I have and something I
know" and only that. The something I know is a separate piece, and the
something I have doesn't itself involve any extra knowledge.

Still, it feels like using WidgetLocker with an authenticator widget would
be quite a change from using an authenticator only after first
screen-unlocking the Android device. I don't know why it feels that way.

I dont see any problems with it. The goal of authenticator app is not to
validate that you have the screen passowrd in any way. It is only to
validate that you have the device, as you mentioned "something I have". The
google password provied the first factor "something that you know".

I agree with rasmu, he pretty much sums it up perfectly. Addtionally, like
you (nobus) said, it's really *no* different from a SecureID token.

Really, what it comes down to (for me) is that I'm not worried about my
wife or my family or my friends breaking into my gmail (or whatever)
account. What concerns me is if my password is compromised because of a
keylogger or virus or whatever on a system at work/friend's house/wherever.

The chances of some 'stranger' getting a hold of my phone (and therefor my
security tokens) AND knowing my login/password is extremely unlikely.

Would love this. I recently had my account accessed by someone in China and
sprung straight for the authentication (ideally I should have done it
earlier).

I would love to be able to play a widget on my home screen, 2x1, that just
has the code similar to how battle.net's app works.

PLEASE make this happen! :)

has the code similar to how battle.net's app works with the same design as
the current authenticator application. (Code + a circle timer).

It seem so easy for a programmer to implement, please make this happen!

yeah - I think they have pretty much given up on development. I switched
over to authy (which supports google auth keys). They don't have a widget
either, but they at least seem more motivated to continue development, plus
their app is way better looking.
