Same issue here. Same build of Xperia Z1. Google Apps for domains account
is being used if that matters.

After pressing "Begin Setup" I get the crash error:

"Unfortunately, Authenticator has stopped."

I've JUST selected the report button.

A friend with a 4.2.2 Telstra ROM of the phone just tried this and it
successfully went past the point where it fails for me.

Xperia Z. Android 4.3. Google Authenticator app was working since update
(clean firmware install via PC) but has now stopped working: when app is
opened, set-up screen appears. If "begin set-up" is selected, app crashes.

Please stop telling, if you're affected by this issue, because everyone
gets an e-mail whenever somebody does so.
Instead, just star/vote for this issue. Thank you.

Comment #7 on issue 353 by brokenha...@gmail.com: Google Authenticator
was having the same problem, but found a workaround for this.

Instead of clicking "begin setup" go to options at the top right and click
setup account. I then used the barcode scanner to add my device using
the "change device" option on my google account settings (on pc).

Seems that the issue only exists in the "begin setup" option, however i
have not verified other setup options

http://code.google.com/p/google-authenticator/issues/detail?id=353

I saw a warning message that Authenticator can only be installed on one
device at a time. It could be possible that because Authenticator is
already activated on an old device, it crashes trying to setup on a new
device instead of (sensibly) displaying an error message e.g. "Sorry you
already activated... scan a barcode...". If you are moving to a new device,
go here:
https://accounts.google.com/b/0/SmsAuthSettings

And select the option to "Move to a different phone".

On your phone, do as comment #7 suggested (scan the barcode provided) and
it should work.

Comment #11 on issue 353 by w...@williamfrantz.com: Google Authenticator
This appears to be a bug (feature?) in the Sony firmware and has caused
problems with other apps as well. See
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20473630

AndroidHttpClient.execute() will unexpected call
AndroidHttpClient.isMmsRequest(). The app crashes if it does not have MMS
permission(?).

I have a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact (D5503) with Android 4.3 (build
14.2.A.1.114). Fortunately, the suggested workaround was successful for
me. Open Authenticator but do NOT press the "Begin setup" button.
Instead, select "setup account" from the option menu. Then from another
device, go to https://accounts.google.com/b/0/SmsAuthSettings, select "Move
to a different phone" and scan the QR code.

To fix this problem, the Authenticator app could use DefaultHttpClient
instead of AndroidHttpClient.

Sony Xperia Z1 here. I can confirm that selecting the "Move to a different
phone" option seems to sort this problem out.

How ridiculous, this problem is obviously still an issue and after many
months of being reported, nothings been done about it, whether it's Sony's
fault of Google's, the two would sort of out.

I've got a Sony xperia z ultra, and the problem's still there, and although
they may well be a workaround you need another phone or computer to do it,
sort it out Google it's your app.

Good news, KitKat is on its way to my phone at the very moment.
For those who don't have it yet I found that open source
otp-authenticator-android worked for me well with 4.2.

Comment #23 on issue 353 by hzaldiva...@gmail.com: Google Authenticator
Hi Guys! Had same issue with Sony Xperia ZL with Android 4.3, 10.4.B.0.569

Solved it:
- Open Authenticator but do NOT press the "Begin setup" button.
- Instead, select "setup account" from the option menu.
Then from another device, go to
https://accounts.google.com/b/0/SmsAuthSettings, select "Move to a
different phone" and scan the QR code.

If Google Authenticator is not set up as PRIMARY WAY YOU RECEIVE CODES, set
it up.

The solution would be for Google to fix their goddam app instead of users
having to find workarounds. Who write these apps, what a bunch of idiots.

Question: this issue has been around for quite some time, (Xperia ZR here),
and I can't use proper security on my dropbox or on google.

Is google aware of this? Are they taking steps to rectify this?

Google does not have a great track record on fixing issues like this, and
do favor new additions that nobody cares about over getting rid of bugs,
but it's still nice to assume it's not because they don't care. I prefer to
think they've put incompetent people on bug reporting, or quite simply are
not aware of the bugs due to massive incompetence on the side of the people
in charge of fixing said bugs.

TLDR: they're not evil, just not aware of their own bug tracker.
