Mark,
To remove 2-step verification from your Google account, go to
https://www.google.com/accounts/b/0/SmsAuthConfig
and click "Turn off 2-step verification..."
If you would like to keep 2-step verification enabled, in order for your
phone to receive email you will likely need to use an "Application-specific
password" as described at
http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=1056283&topic=1056286
Hope this helps,
Drew

Are you saying that the Google Authenticator application can't be deleted
from your phone and is also messing up your phone connection? What steps
did you take to try to delete the application from the phone?
Google Authenticator has no access to the network layer of your phone.
Moreover, it's a conventional application which can be deleted from
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> click on the app ->
Uninstall.
I wonder if the issue is that you've enabled 2-step verification on your
account and now your phone can't connect to your account because it needs
to use an Application-Specific Password instead of your usual password.
