Change goes into affect:

June 1, 2021

This is not surprising.  As the official notice states, the change is to:

"bring our (Google's) policies more in line with industry standards. "

Google has undoubtedly realized that they can't keep offering unlimited free Drive storage forever.

Accounts have 15 GB of free storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

Changes are to Photos, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and Jamboard files.

I'm assuming that Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and Jamboard files will no longer show as 0 bytes after June 1, 2021.

This was bound to happen at some point.

I suspect that the pandemic accelerated the process, with a lot a businesses turning to cloud based solutions to manage their processes, internal and otherwise.

I frequent freelance platforms like Upwork, and I've noticed a marked uptick in Google Workspace and Google Cloud Platform related projects.

When this change was initially announced a few months back, Google For Education accounts were said to be exempt. I wonder if that's still the case.
